Why had his soul left his body when ... (Spoilers)

He already lost his soul before he fell. Lost focus of what life truly was. He was too busy chasing something he didn't have and forgot to appreciate what he did have, which was actually everything. So I suppose thats why the Soul left since he was already dead in a way. "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul"

That's a decent rationalisation which I'd had been thinking covered it as well but two things:-

1. When he falls we see his body fall so far, then his soul hits the bottom. So they show us the exact moment his soul left his body.

2. That sounds more like the "lost souls" section we see in the film, which are people who are still alive. They're not in the same situation he was in, ascending the elevator to the great beyond.

He's in a spiritual weigh station, his imminent death in the hospital to occur when his soul's ushered into the Great Beyond.

That's something I've seen elsewhere in fiction, the idea that if a person is comatose the spirit has left the body and entered whatever Great Beyond the author has thought up. And yes, the stories like this I've read usually have the theme of the wandering spirit trying to get back to the body before it's too late.
