Kubo wins Bafta for best animated film

Wasn't expecting that, but then I haven't seen it.

Baftas are usually a good indicator of how the Oscars are going to go, so I suspect Disney may not be winning any Oscars this year.

A shame, but strong competition isn't necessarily a bad thing!

It's been spoken about with several people who study these awards and one thing that keeps being brought up again and again is this is very likely due to split vote between Dory and Zootopia. Check out the search trends over the last month in the U.K. it's pretty obvious that Zootopia And Dory were running neck and neck!

With that said it won't happen again! First off the Academy is very Disney friendly but even if it did come down to let's say a split vote with Moana and Zootopia (I don't see Disney letting this happen, and will very likely sway voters over to Zootopia) Kubo faces worse odds among the art crowd with two other films! And I've head that the Red Turtle does have its fans!

I wouldn't read more into this than there is! Zootopia still has won every single other major award this season including large voting blocks like the Editors, Producers, and Animation. Kubo so far has only the FX and British (not sure the size) and it's very likely Zootopia will also carry the writing wing due to it was the only film that was even considered for a writing Oscar. The biggest challenge for Kubo will also be winning the Actors Branch (the largest of the Academy). This is by far the most liberal bunch in the Academy also! So yeah, the BAFTA's were a fluke! But pretending like everything else Zootopia has going for it (including winning everything else) and also the AFI Award who's been 100% correct on Oscar odds is great oversimplification. This might be a set back but it doesn't by far take away Zootopia's front runner status!
