The only likable character in this film was the bear.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story, and was happy to see a modern movie that didn't try to rely solely on crappy CGI. It was also refreshing to see that it wasn't a remake, reboot, re-imagining or a piss-poor sequel. I think this movie could have been very good if the characters were written better.

But stop for a minute and think about the main characters:

1. Jenn- She invited some random dude she met in the woods back to camp, missed an opportunity to possibly save Alex with the bear repellent (although, that may have been by design, lol), and wasted the flare. After the attack, she began running blindly through the woods and falling on her ass every 10 feet, not a very effective means of escape. She didn't come across as too bright.

2. Alex- Just a complete overly-jealous *beep* douchebag. He was trying to prove something to Jenn, and got himself killed in the process. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. I think if he had every tool at his disposal (guns, compass, map, phone, etc...) he would have still screwed it up and ended up dead.

3. Brad- By purposely antagonizing Alex from the moment he met him, he kind of drove the guy to head out with his mind all screwed up. Not that I think Alex had a chance to begin with, but, Brad was a prick. When he pissed on the tree 5 feet in front of them, I was kind of hoping the bear would get him too.

4. The bear- This big guy was just chilling in his woods, fishing, and running around. Then, these two idiots invade his territory, leaving bloody socks and food dangling from low-hanging branches. He followed them around for a couple of days, realized how damn stupid they were, and killed Alex just to make sure the two wouldn't breed. I think the bear did us all a favor.

5. The Ranger- He seemed to be an OK guy. He just wasn't in the film long enough to make any kind of impact.

So, the bear is the hero of this story. I didn't feel any compassion for the humans in this one. I almost wish the bear would have gotten all three of the protagonists, lined them up buffet style and invited his bear buddies over for a nice meal.

Outstanding review. ????

No, mediocre review for a mediocre movie. Like I said, I thought the story was good. It was just the characters that took me out of it.

My comment was sincere. I just hit question mark instead of exclamation mark.

Hey, no worries. I thought about doing a serious review in the review section. But, then I decided to have some fun with it on the boards. 

Hmmm... I didn't think the bear was committed to killing them. He put in one half-hearted appearance after killing the boyfriend.

I told my wife I was hoping the bear would have beaten her to the parking lot, slaughtered everyone there just to crush her spirit when she arrived... then just as she was weeping and at the end of her rope she would open the SUV...

... to find the bear waiting for her in the back seat.

But that's just me.

Lol. Great alternative ending!

#4 lol. I agree with this entire post.

Motives for the way the two campers were acting were shock. I think people have been so desensitized by movies they expect ever Tom, Dick or Hairy to turn into Rambo when they're in a high-stakes situation.

Everyone would like to think they would do everything right in a bad situation but unfortunately reality is different from choreographed movies. Could some people fair better in a bear attack situation than these two? Of course. But in all honesty we're watching what would happen to most people.
