WAR theme in Animation

What do you think about War animation movie? Interesting? Or not interesting? Why?

reply

definitely interesting for me because it's quite rare.
you can pick out japanese war-themed animations such as 'Grave of the Fireflies' or 'The Wind Rises', but they're not focusing the story to the war itself (which i assume is the main point of 'Battle of Surabaya').

the closest one i could think of is 'Waltz With Bashir'. you guys might wanna check it out.

reply

yaa, Waltz with Bashir is a good reference. But, It's seem like a heavy theme. I think its for restrict (R) rating. I've checked gross in USA about US$ 2M. I Think Grave of the Fireflies or The Wind Rises more general war-themed animations. But i think is good idea to make different. Thank you for the reference. I will discuss it to my team for the next our movie project.

Interesting, but its depend on how the war depiction should be. BoS is meant for kids. I didnt even see any blood or the horrow of war, and atleast twist for complex plot.

Here I suggest an idea for future movie if its not targeted for adult idea, i think the creator can adapt local war stories with modern depction. Why not create mecha themed or near future with existing war storyline. Lets say in Majapahit era, they use advanced technological robot or also the setting in post-apocalypstic era.

reply

Why not just use historical setting just as it is without resorting to adding those modern / futuristic theme? Just have interesting character design and exciting storytelling can keep kids excited enough.

reply

IMO, historical setting can go two way, as accurate as possible or you go wild with your imagination. as long as character design and storytelling is good it's no problem which way the director take
