2D Animated Feature Film

What do you think about 2D animation movie?

reply

I do think 2d animated feature film will still attract modern audiences despite of 3D trend. Based on some reaction I read about BoS, there are a lot of Indonesian people who wanted to see this one.

So don't worry about that.

The one which should make you worry should be, will those who are interested go to the cinema to see BoS?

reply

Ha..ha... yes, you're right. I think that Indonesian people have a unique reaction about movie in the cinema. They always need a something new. Even famous actress or actor didn't help much to increase the number of audiences. But we try in BoS to give the best we can do. We put the actress who chose by fans, and actor who the best winner in citra award, we also try to be recognized by professional institution by winning awards, we also make a music that become a soundtrack to engagement the audience, and we put the Dolby Surround 7.1 in our audio system in the movie. But all of that.. I dont know.. I hope that the audience can enjoy the entertainment and make a lot of number audiences who watching this movie... thank you for your support..... regards...

nowadays, 2D animations will always have place in audience's heart.

just try thinking about your most disliked movie, and then imagine it as an animation.
it would sounds slightly better.

reply

I think I agree with you. There's a place for 2D animations in audience's heart. Then, I and my team will try to develop 2D animation movie in the advance level. I mean that level of detail will be increase. Also the technique of cinematography will be more complex. Maybe i will use hybrid technology to realize our dreams. The most important that i will consider is the story. I will try to make a good story.

So, what do you think about software or technique such as 3D cell shading, is that technique will be decrease the idealism of 2D animation?

reply

i don't think so. instead, it would make it even better. but don't worry about that. i think if you can make the story, the atmosphere and everything good enough, people will enjoy it regardless of how the animation would turned out to be. just like any regular movies.

yes, it's 2015, some audience still watches animation films just for the eye-candy and kids-friendly stuff. but there's still alot of them wanting so much more than that.

I remember watching 2d animation from Indonesian folk tales when I was kid, i dont remember the company, but they adapt Indonesian folk tales for kids such Bawang Putih & Bawang Merah, Si Kancil, It was fun to watch as a kid. For today, as grown up.. watching animation movie is something unusual for most of Indonesia parents because its meant for kids not adult.

After watching this movie, I think for 1st Indonesia animation movie I watched is inspirational for youth to be part of this industry because there are many potential Indonesian stories, folk-tales, and local culture. As yet my parent wish someday I can create a local cartoon that adapted from my region where they want to create for kids audience..

It takes time for mature (not youth) Indonesian audience to accept 2d animation is great medium that same as like serious movie. Not only for kids. I wish BoS appearence can boost youth people to get inspired eventhough I dont know is this movie success or not, but atleast... BoS can be a remarkable as animation movie for Indonesian pop culture.

2D animation will never die as long as you have unique character design, good concept, colors, and most importantly GOOD STORYLINE. The last one if my main concern that we don't have local talented story writer that specifically write children storybook. Sure we have lots of talented novelist, but they mainly wrote heavy subject and teenage / adult theme.

Even if we don't have one yet, at least have few people worked on the script instead of one people alone. Two or more heads are better than one right? This is what Pixar do, they have "Think Tank" when creating concept. Everybody pitched in their ideas during "brainstorming session", and they build from there.

reply

I think there are some children storybooks that I found on book store where most of them written by kids such "kecil-kecil punya karya", but its not something adult take notice of.
I think it will be fair enough if Indonesia people think that "animation" instead "CGI" are meant to all ages. Pixar works mostly on CGI, but they alwayys have interest things part that everyone love their movie because they can relate to audiences.

reply

Writing stories for "all ages" is something we still stumble and worked on. Hopefully in this generation or future, we will have brilliant writers that can achieve that. We still need to learn, and learning should be fun!

reply

I am surely there are too much talented writer. But I am not avid book readers.
I think if the director want to create for all age movies, why not adapting one of Indonesian writer work such Andrea Hirata (I read all his books) into animation. Since the movie didnt went well. If you read one of novel, I am sure "Edensor" or Maryamah Karpov can be a good start to animate because in his writing have imaginative parts that work well in animation.
cmiiw.

reply

From that, why not hire a novelist to write the script? At least novel writer help to structure a story. Then it can be break down into script to be adapted into movie. Imagine if Andrea Hirata helped with BoS.

Story is the meat of a movie. A good one can turn a mediocre quality film into an impressionable movie. A bad one could not save a film even if the quality is top notch.

reply

I wish the director read this. But considering budget to pay the write must be difficult.
Same thing when I wonder, this movie can attract viewers if they hire today idol like coboy junior or jkt48 in the main cast.

reply

you don't always have to write kids-friendly stuff for an animation. heavy stuff works too, and it's still interesting to watch (at least for me).

reply

Okay, I used to troll around IMDB boards disguising myself as either American douchebag or British.. but actually, I'm an Indonesian
But now it's time to stop to do such things..
IMHO, 2D animation won't die as long as it has such an appealing concept (especially for the story itself, I think that the only thing which BoS lacks of is this).
Since we have so much hardcore Animu fans here in Indonesia (mostly are males, they are so many), so it's okay to use such a style.
So, well.. making 2D is good thing to go..
