I find it absurd so many don't like Dr Gallinger for what he did?? He didn't do anything wrong both morally, ethically and legally at the time..
And Eugenics isn't a bad idea at all, he had the best interest of humanity at heart and acted in what he believed was right just like all the other doctors at the Knick.
We perform eugenics on animals every day from dog to horse selective breeding.
It certainly didn't hurt society to perform vasectomy on idiots who will most likely grow up to be nothing but rapists, murderesr and drunks who would impregnate whores. In terms of the utilitarian view of morality, Gallinger's vasectomis were the the best moral action.
Ok, ill make it simple for you. Your beliefs are wrong. Basically you're asking "why are so many people saying 2 plus 2 equals 4, when its -267.85979?" Because you're wrong. Have a great evening!
Here, I'll answer it for you: Eugenics falls under the same tree as Hitler's Final Solution.
So while LEGALLY (according to early 20th century law) it may have been OK: morally and ethically it is a crime against humanity.
And no one was outraged (on the show) because it demonstrated the sign of the times. But to decent human beings watching it in 2015-16, it's absolutely horrible!
I don't mind him performing eugenics on the mentally challenged. Even with genetics aside, it would be pure cruelty to the offspring of such parents who aren't even fit to look after them and who will end up with miserable lives.
From purely genetic perspective, eugenics fails as people carry recessive genes and it is very hard to breed a superhuman - the more of these superior similar genes you combine (as you would for instance with inbreeding), the lack of diversity really brings out the *beep* recessive genes they might carry. And the whole background to that idea were the notions of inferior races which has long been proven completely inaccurate.
The thing with Gallinger is that he is just too much of a bitch and his game is weak. He could have been a really interesting controversial character, even with his racism. At the beginning of the season I sympathized with him and his personal situation, and started getting some respect for him, but then in the end he is not a person of convictions. He is an inferior surgeon to Algernon so he whines about it and plays dirty to sabotage him (and trust me, Im no fan of Algernon.
His racism comes only partially from the ways of the society, which greater people around him managed to overcome, and other part purely out of his inferiority complex.
If it wasn't for that inferiority, if he played fair in the surgery room, maybe he would have more sympathizers. He is mainly focusing on sterilizing idiots because he sees it as his one way of getting some recognition, while his peers in the hospital are doing groundbreaking things. He isn't inventive or original. That's his motivation.
I can't believe I'm actually answering this...but on the off chance your actually so confused and not just stirring the pot let me help out. Eugenics is a slippery slope. It's the ultimate slippery slope, you say sterilizing the mentally challenged is ok? How challenged do you have to be? If the goal is to "cleanse the population" as it was, you should be aggressive in theory. So is there an I.Q. cut off? What about those people who are autistic and might qualify as "special needs" yet have extrodinairely gifts for math? Don't we want that trait in the gene pool? Are we only selecting for looks? Because I know a lot of beautiful, and stupid people so that's not going to make our "race" any stronger. Look at the people who have made extrodinairy contributions to the world, Eisnstein, Van Gogh, Temple Grandin, etc all who had a learning issue, mental disorder, etc who would have been eradicated. And the fact is when you are breeding animals it is very well known that breeding for a single trait is how you get deformities. The more cross breeding that is done the stronger the species. (Hence the success of short lived highly reproductive organisms like bacteria and viruses). What we know about genetics today makes eugenics look about as good idea as some of the other medical practices of that time.
Once the camel gets its nose in the tent, you can't keep him out. Hitler and his quack doctors started with Jews. The it was Gypsies, Gays, and eastern Europeans, and anyone else they didn't like.
I've read about the history of Eugenics and it's true that it did fit in with the morality and transient ideology of it's time.
Galinger however has a smug sense of entitlement. Juxtaposed to Thackery, his racism cannot be undone with any amount of reasoning. This makes it evident that he has nefarious intentions for eugenics at heart. He is likely the kind of man who eventually brought eugenics to be used for exterminating "undesirables" as the mentally ill were called back then, and of course ya know...6 million Jews. So, he's evil. Through and through.
Your username should be sufficient proof that you are nothing but a troll. But to humor you anyway, this is in the trivia section for The Knick here at the Internet Movie Database:
In one of Season Two's DVD extras, while talking about what the future holds for the show's characters, Eric Johnson (who plays Dr. Everett Gallinger) says, "just in case we're wondering how you need to feel about my character, Gallinger learns about Eugenics, takes the message to Europe--specifically to Germany. So in the world of The Knick, Gallinger is somehow responsible for the Holocaust." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2937900/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2#spoilers
That's why people dislike Gallinger. Even the guy who played him says he's basically The Knick's ur-Nazi.

Gallinger was a dick, who was jealous of being shunted aside for Edwards, enough so that he tried to sabotage him by doctoring the curare Edwards used in his hernia operation, so he could jump in to be seen as "saving" the patient. He also had his wife committed to an institution, turning his back on her so he could have "the other woman," whoever she was he hopped into bed with.
