Just like an 80's version of Dazed & Confused, except it isn't funny!
Swing and a miss!! Boy, what a shockingly bad offering from Linklater. I just saw it listed on Amazon and went for it. Must have been straight to video? This thing never got off the ground. Other than the lead, all of the characters were generic versions of Otter from Animal House; obnoxious, crude, overly confident and annoying, sans the clever lines, warmth and charm of Tim Matheson.
I loved Otter, but in all his BS he WAS likeable. These guys are generic dullards whose character development is limited to a couple cliché (really cliché) one-liners that sound like they were written by a 10 year old or recycled from other coming of age movies that bombed. There was actually a reference to "Five Knuckle Shuffle"? I'm supposed to laugh at that, and then I need one of the actors to make the motion to explain it to the audience? Why not just use the term "over the shoulder bolder holder" as long as we're going full retard.
It is ass-puckering painful watching an actor behave smug and confident with a wry smile while delivering tired, uninspired lines with zero charm that are below the poverty line with regard to cleverness and originality.
Then let's just throw in the useless love story and then it ends with the lead (I can't even remember his name I was so uninterested at that point) just going to sleep in his class.
"Everybody Wants Some" - A new category of film: Comedies that aren't funny.
