LOVED the movie but this scene is a bit of BS. Rapper's Delight got to like 36 on the Billboard cart in 1980. Not many people knew it all that much at the time.
This scene was total pandering to the Millennial crowd or revisionist history. White, southern jocks were NOT listening to Sugar Hill Gang in 1980.

I was a cheerleader when it came out. My friends and I knew all the words. And I still do! We might not have had the Internet to find the lyrics, but without it we had plenty of time to lie around and listen to music until we knew them. Completely realistic.
