Now, anyone of any age can go back to college. What I don't know is if they're allowed to play sports. But they can join fraternities and stuff.

It was definitely an eligibility thing. I'm not sure if his age mattered, but the fact that it was likely his 12th season playing would be a big deal. Even if he hadn't been doing it continuously for the past ~7 years his eligibility was likely up after 4 years, so doing what he was doing at all would be against the rules.
