Could they have gone to a bank to get change?

Although I understand that a part of the theme is that the main characters are simple and get taken advantage of, as soon as they started having that problem with the notes at the market I started wondering about this.

Could they have gone to a bank to get the notes changed to smaller denominations? Or is that not normal in rural parts of India?
