'Visitors' DVD review

In his previous films, Godfrey Reggio showed how we were trapped in a frantic technological world. The impression was of a sped-up treadmill. With "Visitors," he wants us to slow down, which he knows will make us uncomfortable. The pace and the uncompromising and pristine esthetic are an attempt to make us monks in a monastery to force deep contemplation. The stiller and more quiet we are, the more our senses are heightened.

For me the technique doesn't work. The slo-mo doesn't make watching the film "uncomfortable" but just boring. Koyaanisqatsi began slow and speeded up as it progressed. The slowness of Visitors doesn't make it more insightful, mainly because the message is a simple one and doesn't require one to stare for a minute or two at each face. If you fast-forward the DVD, the point comes across just as well.
