I hear this is shit

The critics I've seen are mentioning "Apocalypse Now" (which I've never seen but I don't like the subject matter), "2001" and "First Man" (the former is a classic but the latter sent me to sleep more than once). One critic in particular, Kermode, has said that this movie is blatantly like "Event Horizon", but I'd rather see that again than this.

So, is it worth it? Or shall I just see something else?

Wait for the blu ray or better reviews. Why take the risk?

I went to a huge IMAX screen to watch it, and I enjoyed the space scenes IN IMAX, but very little else. Plot is shallow and dissappointing. And I love 2001, and First Man was made well, but kinda forgettable. Ad Astra is not forgettable, it was regrettable.

Many parts that are presented in Ad Adstra are never resolved, and you end up not caring. The primary plot point drama is resolved poorly, and pathetically.

Only saw Event Horizon once, but I don't see the parallels to Ad Astra

Wait for it free on whatever streaming you subscribe to.

I won't even be bothering to buy the Blu-ray... and *I* bought "Star Crash"!! :D

My best advice is watch and or read reviews on the directors other film The Lost City of Z. While they are, in terms of genre, very different films. In terms of style, atmosphere, writing, etc. they are very similar. Chances are if you don't like Z (or the look of it), probably give Ad Astra a pass.

Personally I didn't Z, I did find it a bit slow and tedious but end of the day worth at least one watch. Ad Astra I preferred, thought it had a bit more going on to keep me interested. Now this isn't hard sci-fi either so don't think about if the science works or not, I think if you can stomach Star Trek The Motion Picture this film probably would be worth a crack.

I liked the film but it's closer to First Man (which I also liked) than the other films you've listed.

Terrible structure and writing. Some well done scenes that don't fit with each other at all. The movie has no idea what it wants to be and is a mess of plot amnesia. Also, it tries for hard science style but plays like fantasy.

C- for Brad and Tommy being decent. Otherwise I'd go much lower. I do like some things about the ultimate ending though ... sorta.

Skip it.

One of the worst movies of the summer. Two hours of boring schlock. Just can't trust paid critics anymore. so when looking at RT, the audience score is usually a better indicator of whether you will like it, and Ad Astra has an audience score of 42% (and I bet it trends downward in the next few weeks).

reply

Always trust the audience score over paid critics with agendas who are judging crap like cinematography and style. Paying audiences don’t really care about that BS. They want something useful or at least interesting. This was neither.
