Let No Man Steal Your Thyme

I'm in love with the song. Does anyone know what type of music is it? Any recommendations are welcome too.

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.

"Let No Man Steal Your Thyme is an old folksong, evidently Irish in origin.

It's on the soundtrack, and you can buy the CD or just the song MP3 on Amazon -- just search for "Far from the Madding Crowd" or "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme."

For other suggestions on similar music/songs, just a few thoughts:

Kate Winslet also sings some charming folk songs in "Sense and Sensibility":

Sense and Sensibility -- Weep You No More Sad Fountains
Kate Winslet Version (from film)

(NOTE: I'm a formally trained singer, but ironically, I don't really like the album version -- I really wish they'd let Kate Winslet's version appear on the soundtrack)

If you like these kinds of songs, I would recommend a few other old Irish songs I really love:

She Moved Through the Fair (Sinead O'Connor's version is my favorite)
My Lagan Love (a variation on the above song -- Kate Bush does a gorgeous cover)
Mná na hÉireann (Kate Bush again -- a gorgeous piece)
The Parting Glass (Traditional -- I prefer a tenor on this one)
I am Stretched On Your Grave (Sinead is again very good on this and several others)
The Moorlough Shore
Her Mantle So Green
The Last Rose of Summer
We Dreamed Our Dreams
The Star of the County Down
Sliabh na mBan

Or you could also check out Elizabethan love songs, which are a century or two earlier but have the same spare beauty as this song, particularly John Dowland, Henry Purcell, or Philip Rosseter. Dowland's are gorgeous, and Sting did a whole album covering them ("Songs from the Labyrinth").

Hope this helps!
