Another Polygamy story that has little resemblance to reality.

Check out Polygamy USA on National Geographic Channel or even Sister Wives on TLC. Heck, Big Love got some things more right.

It's a fictional story. If it interested you for two hours or entertained you, then it's done its job. If it hasn't, then that's okay too. But unless the story is "based on a true story", then I don't suppose it really matters if it gets details "right" or not.

You're a very mean-spirited person.

reply

Lighten up ffs. It is a movie, watch it for entertainment and don't take it so seriously. And for pity's sake stop bashing people just because they don't see things the way you do....it's not a good look.

How do you know if this story does or doesn't resemble anything polygamy related? Are you a polygamist? I am guessing so since you have all the facts about it.. Did this movie say "Based on a true story" no it did not. So why so defensive about polygamy?

reply

It isn't any worse than movies that show up on syfy channel.

reply

Well, I might know a thing or two about the subject...

Ervil Barlow was a prophet. It was through a different polygamy sect than FLDS. Maybe this story itself is fictional but he sure wasn't. Read Favorite Wife, Cult Insanity or Shattered Dreams (Irene Spencer)

reply

My bad, it was Ervil LeBaron. Had the first name right

reply

I've seen those too. But I was looking for a fun flick with a little bit of romance when I checked into this one, not a reality show where the momentum is always interrupted by talking heads.
I miss Big Love.

Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality

reply

Yeah right, "Sister Wives". Books, most of these people live in isolated places just like the one in the film and the wives are NOT happy.

reply

The group the Sister Wives belong to is the 2nd largest group of polygamists in the U.S. Centennial Park (featured on Polygamy USA) is another large group.

Neither of them has any resemblance to this film which is obviously referencing the FLDS group. You are correct that this film does have a real life counterpart, but the majority of polygamists are nothing like this. Just the one group. Fortunately that group is hemorrhaging members and with any luck will disintegrate in the near future.

reply

THAT would be awesome, thanks for the info. But I hope the more civilized polygamous group implodes as well.

reply

Michelle, are you certain this was Ervil LEBARON? Nasty as the prophet is here, he seems much more mild than Ervil.

*Edit* Never mind, stupid question, as they had cell phones that weren't around when he was prophet.

reply

It's a retelling of the Scarlet Letter with a polygamy twist.

reply

With a little Romeo and Juliet thrown in for good measure.
