Eye Holes?

What's the deal with Garazeb's eyes? Is the black part the pupil, covered by a cornea with an extremely thin iris? Or are his eyes like hollowed out billiard balls with a hole drilled in it, like if he laid dow down and stared up, could you pour water into that hole and fill it up?
