Why are there so many lesbians on this show?

Every season has a minimum of 3 pixie cut butches. I'm just wondering why exactly is that?

And in advance, I'm not saying anything against gays/lesbians but since they're such a small percentage of the population but like 70% of the women on the show why are they so represented?

So you don't have anything "against" gays/lesbians but you thought you needed to make this a topic of discussion. I think it must bother you more than you're willing to admit.

Just to throw this out there, I've worked in the restaurant industry for about 24 years now. I'd say about 80-85% of the female chefs/sous chefs/line cook etc. were lesbians. So from my personal experience, I'd say the show has the statistical odds right. It's just how it is. It's not like they seek out lesbian chefs any more than straight men chefs, it's just who they have to choose from in the pool of applicants.

Tons of queenie gay guys too---my thought is:

(1) there are many people like this in the food industry

(2) these are people who are disproportionately attracted to and comfortable with self-promotion and being be on a reality TV show

(3) this demographic tends to have large telegenic over-the-top personalities

(4) the casting agents for The Food Network *and* for HGTV seem to favor gay people (for whatever reason)

Limeginger, you said it perfectly! Thank you for telling the OP, I just got upset and ranted, while you gave clear points.

The people on the show are there to cook, and most of the time get messed up and dirty with the sabotages. First, you can't judge a gay/straight book by it's cover. Second, why the judgement on lesbians, or gay people in general? The chefs are there to win money by cooking with possible sabotages, they are not on the show thinking it is a dating game.

My mother had a pixie cut hairstyle for many years when I was in middle school, only wore under-eye concealer, and wasn't into the latest clothing trends - she is heterosexual. Yet several of my lesbian friends and my lesbian aunt look nothing like you description. They have long beautifully styled hair, get gel coated nails done every week, wear an appropriate amount of makeup, and wear cute clothes and high-heels.
