Carl seems to be all talk

He keeps going about how he's good in all areas and he's so great at it, but so far all his costumes have been lackluster. The Silent Hill Mannequin thing was just too out there, no one even knew what he was supposed to be, plus it looked really messy and was falling apart.

The Haunt costume was ok but it looked really messy around the edges and the mask could have been way better than it was.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

This is not a defense of the Mannequin costume.

You ask how someone is going to win with a costume no one knows. I general Sf convention masquerades the majority of costumes are original designs. They are not recreations from other sources. (Those do exist BTW and compete against the original costumes.)

It is quite easy for original costumes to win. They must show good design skills, construction techniques and good storytelling. Recreations (which are what most of the Heroes of Cosplay feature) are judged on accuracy to the source, good construction techniques and good storytelling.

The mannequin character was very difficult to achieve. I don't know Haunt, but looking at some images online Carl's costume wasn't bad at all. It just wasn't as good as many of the others.

Carl's Mannequin costume was a big mess and looked slapped together. I'll give him credit, a couple of the mannequin heads looked pretty good but overall it didn't look very good. The Haunt costume was okay but not great, it had large sections of just white with none of the black tendrils and lines going through it I've seen in pictures, overall it was kind of meh.

Yeah the Haunt costume wasn't that good, and he said it was one of his best costumes he's ever done, i guess that says it all.

I watched this last night and thought the same thing. He's more talk than talent. My daughter and I went over his costumes and both of us agree...he's not as good as he says he is.

The mannequin is a pretty scary creature in Silent Hill, it looked to me like he just slapped some PVC pipe, molded hands/feet and some foam mannequin heads together with hot glue. Not good.

His Haunt costume was really messy as well, instead of looking deliberate it looked like he spilled white paint on it and tried to make it look like it belonged. Rough edges, the body suit, I don't expect it to be skin tight, but if he used spandex it wouldn't have looked as sloppy in the lower area.

reply

Yeah, that Mannequin was awful. He would have been far better of using real mannequin parts and then painting his own limbs to match. White PVC tubes look nothing like mannequin limbs.

The Haunt one had potential, but why didn't he paint the lower half of his face white? The normal flesh color of his mouth looked odd. And I totally agree that his painting job looked lazy.

Like the rest of the guys, his costumes lacked the attention to detail that the girls all have. Jesse's Mega Man looked like blue painted PVC tubing, and the distressing was an obvious afterthought when it got damaged in shipping.

I think his main problem is that he is not a good painter. The sloppy paint job ruined both his costumes so far.

Considering the amount of time some of the other non-show competitors put into their creations, some of these folks are lucky to be on the same stage, and probably wouldn't if it weren't for the show (I have five days, oh, I have one day and so much to do! Really?!)

It may be a case of suddenly being a small fish in a big pond. His confidence may come from receiving lots of praise from friends and family and maybe smaller cosplay groups before coming to the shows. He just has to refine his skills a bit, painting especially. He's young, he has time to develop his skills and ideas. Hopefully he will retain his confidence and continue to compete and grow as a cosplayer.

I like Carl's can-do attitude and vision, however he needs to focus on finer details. The finish on his costumes so far have looked very much thrown on. Carl, if you're listening, focus on something that really highlights craftsmanship instead of volume. When it comes to cos-play, beauty is only skin deep unfortunately.
