Yaya should not be a judge.

If the last episode shows anything, Yaya should not be eligible to Judge. She is clearly friends with the show's main contestants and that appears to give them a heavy advantage.

Going out to drink with them afterwards clearly underscores this.

Maybe she should stick to competing.

I also wonder how this makes the locals feel when these con-heads travel to every con entering and winning and leaving the local cosplayers swinging in the wind after all their hard work.

Of course, we are only seeing a selection of 'Cons' from around the country. And, if you watch regularly, you will see they don't always walk away with an award.

BOHICA America!

reply

That's like....the FIRST time Yaya has ever given them awards!

She's an awesome cosplayer - a perfectionist to the max. She's more critical on everyone than any other judge.

I know it's easy to hate on Yaya because she's hot and confident and gets so much attention modeling and doing cosplay, but she really does seem pretty impartial.

Those Soul Caliber girls were awesome.
The peter pan troop wasn't great, but they came out with music and a skit, unlike everyone one else. That's what won it for them.

And Shazaam InJustice and Thorin Oakenshield really deserved to win.

This con didn't have amazing costumes like some of the other cities, so I can see why the Heroes won this time.

I wasn't hating on her.

If she were a judge on any of the Miss America or Miss Universe or even State contests, there would be many questions about her relationships with any winners. Money is at stake in the contests.

It does not appear to be fair, regardless of how she judged them previously.

reply

Money can be at stake with these contests, in fact I would say unless you specifically heard them mention a cash prize there was no money prize which this second set of episodes rarely mentioned.

Ivy Doomkitty (who seems to be Wizards Worlds staple cosplayer right now) also has interactions with the cosplayers on the show being on panels with them, shown in pictures chatting with them etc.

the problem is when you are looking at the cosplayers who are making some kind of business out of it they are going to more likely that just be aware of each other. They take inspiration from each other etc. There are also sometimes rivalries and falling outs just like with anything. It's part of what being a professional is though. Just like when they do jury duty questioning, the follow up question when you say yes to knowing or working around someone is, will that effect your ability to be fair?

reply

You lost credibility when you added the part about hating Yaya because she's 'hot'. I don't like her personality, she's very egotistical and I don't like that about people.

As for the Soul Caliber girls being better than the Peter Pan's Labyrinth girls..no. The PPL girls had very elaborate, well executed costumes. To me they put in more effort and time into their costumes and their presentation. They didn't win just because of a skit/music. I was doubting last night that there was supposed to be a skit anyway. Perhaps producers added the stress of doing a skit and not the actual convention (this would explain why nobody else had skits ready to go.)

I agree, Jesse deserved to win, I thought Miguel's costume was nicely put together and he deserved something for it as well.

We're only seeing a fraction of what costumes were up for judging, I thought the ones we saw were pretty good.

reply

They do seem to be winning much more than the first season
I think it could be the show . I know Jessie got much better
but it might be the show also

Yeah, especially when they make up prizes for the show's contestants, like "best embroidery".

Were you aware that the rest of the group contestants weren't allowed and some refused to participate to the skit? They gave the "best in skit prize" to the Snow White group whom was featured in the show doing a walk on. And made up the honorable mention award just for the show.

reply

The problem with your statement is that costuming/cosplay has a limited number of people in it. I'm friends with a lot of people. I've judged and been judged by them. I've awarded them and not awarded them. I've done the same to people I don't know.

I've won awards and not won awards when judged by friends.

And I've partied with them afterwards.

When the judging pool is small, you can't avoid it.

Aside from Miquel, who she most likely only knows through the show, she hasn't given an individual award to anyone on the show.

on the syfy website they also have the cast critiques of the costumes, she gives both positive and negative critique, found here http://www.syfy.com/videos/Heroes%20of%20Cosplay/The%20Cast%27s%20Crit iques

the point is legit if there is shown to be an issue, but most of the judging panels have had three or four people on them and she could have said on those she would break a tie or something, we don't know how they actually voted in those situations.

reply

Sorry, but the point is legit regardless of whether they win or not.

A judge of any type of contest, especially where prizes are involved, should not be fraternizing with contestants.

This is usually a standard rule in most types of contests, not just for judges, but any people with a major stake in the contest.

Why should this one niche get a pass?

reply

It's sad that because you have a few bad apples who take advantage of situations, and the fact that people are so mistrusting that rules like that have to be put into place.

reply

Ahh, I see. So when I judge a masquerade/cosplay I'm going to recuse myself from, oh I suppose 65 -85% of the entries? Can't work that way. These are small communities. People talk and interact and become friends.

I would only recuse myself for a relative/spouse/ex-spouse. And if I knew any of the above were going to compete I would decline to judge the show. But knowing or having friends competing. No.

reply

Where are they going to find a judge that has experience cosplaying and is qualified to judge AND never socializes at any cons? Where is that magical person going to come from?

If anything, I thought that Power Ranger judge giving a prize to the Power Ranger cosplay just because he was flattered was a major conflict of interest.

reply

lol yaya slammed them down hard many many times, almost humiliated them on stage by asking how they could fail like that when they had so much time etc..

JDF can never be a judge then? as there is always at least 1 power ranger :P
