People kept talking about him like he was a good person. Were they unaware, not care, just being nice or what exactly?
This movie wasn't too good the first time I watched it, but the second viewing is much better for some reason. It is basically a character study on *beep* people (urban white trash). No wonder PSH leaves and goes to Florida in the end.
They all knew he was trash. His mother just wouldn't admit it. The people who said good things were drunks who spent all day sitting on a bar stool who knew nothing. Even some of them didn't agree Leon was any good.
Or maybe his mom didn't know, if he was always nice around her. She wraps him some food for the truck and he kisses her on the cheek in thanks, then later dumps it out the truck window after he looks at it. She may have had no idea, her grief was genuine when he died.
When you get up in the morning, how do you decide what shade of black to wear? (Shallow Grave)
Agree. The only pleasant part of the whole movie was Leon getting whacked on the head. I would have been fine if he'd stayed in the gutter until the rats ate him.
Yeah....he got what he deserved. And the blow was delivered by the right person, and the story of how he got killed backed up by some stand-up guys. That was the only good part of the movie.
I actually think the fact that Leon was repulsive, IS the reason his mother suspects foul play amidst his death. She probably subconsciously always half-expected her son to get killed in a robbery attempt or something to that effect (not a work-related "accident"), though she would never admit to anything like that of course.
Basically, it comes across as if it is a mystical mother's intuition but what it really is, is she halfway suspects he was killed because of how rotten he is, but she can't bring herself to draw up that conclusion due to lack of evidence and denial.
People hate what's popular and people jump on bandwagons. The rest of us are in the middle. Done.
I wondered why on earth Leon's mother was immediately suspicious about how her son died. You make an excellent observation that it was less "mystical mothers intuition" (LOL!) and more that she knew he was such a disgusting person. I believe that's right.
