No rape discussion?

I'm surprised there isn't already a 50-comment thread about the reporter raping Jeanie.

Maybe women will understand that scene, or men who have a lot more insight, but I didn't get it. She clearly didn't want to have sex (and why would she just days after her son's death? and with THAT guy?), but she barely objected and never made a move to stop him. Was it shock? Was she just that passive? Was she "star-struck" by the reporter? Was she just hoping to get more information about her son? Did she consider it rape?

BTW, in this day and age I have no doubt she could report that the reporter took her out in the woods and raped her, and he would likely be convicted.

She was out-of-love with Hoffman's character and mildly charmed by Jenkins' character's come-ons and drive to the country. The sex was more a way to avoid her current grief than anything else, and certainly consensual in its dazed way.

reply

She was sleeping with him hoping he would dig into her son's death and write an article about it.

I'm sure she knew Shellburn's intent when she accompanied him out there - it was actually the second time they'd had sex, or at least the second time he tried (and she obliged); we don't know if they had sex the first time (in her house), or if he passed out before he could.

reply

As mentioned she was merely whoring herself to get some publicity regarding her son to perhaps find out what really happened to him. There was no rape nor anything close. What is surprising (if it happened) is that the drunkard Richard was even able to raise a bone.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

I'm a woman and I did not perceive that scene to be a rape in the least. Yeah, she just laid there looking woefully uninterested, but he didn't force himself on her. She had sex with this lonely old alcoholic reporter and in trade she hoped he'd dig further into her son's death.

Screws fall out all of the time. The world's an imperfect place.

Yes, I was thinking I must've missed something. Maybe I was distracted. I didn't see a rape scene.

If she just laid there, I think that's what she does. We saw that at the beginning of the movie.

Please tell me that you are trolling.

reply

Rape? He didn't rape her.
Not sure what you mean by "THAT guy". PSH was ugly as sin.

maybe ... but then some judge would give him a six month sentence like the 'Stanford swimmer' got -- and THEN the outrage would begin!
