The Rudeness of Victorian Policemen

I was amazed at the scene where Mr Whicher followed the Doctor into the convent, and again at the scene where Whicher walked in on Lock talking to Miss Susan. Why was I amazed? The gentlemen concerned, even the doctor, did not remove their hats!

I know in this day and age it is not considered bad manners to remove one's headgear indoors, but in Victorian England, even the lowest of the low would have removed their hats on entering a building. The story was good, but let down by the characters not following etiquette.

An interesting observation, and I thought the same as you, however I checked and apparently there were many instances where it was not considered necessary to remove hats, for eg., in 'public' buildings or offices, or in private residences if one was not going to be seated.
