Why did the jets attack at the end?

It made no sense at all for the fighter jets to start shooting at the one place where it seemed that non-infected people had found some safety. Sure, there were zombies around the wall, but it was doing a good job at keeping them out. That is, until the damn jets started blowing holes in those walls!

A large crowd of people gathered in one limited space is a zombie snack bar waiting to happen. The troops there didnt have the resource to keep the place fortified and running long term. So some authority figure must have decided that it was better to kill the refugees before they were taken by the zombies and spread the infection further.

Sort of like a firebreak.
