7/10 Drama/thriller: The life within an artist.

7/10
First off this is horrendously misscategorised in my opinion as Fantasy (which could be okey if you see the full action as the inner workings of the mind of the artist) but if so the /horror category is lost as the plot is a metaphor.

I perceive it as a drama (because of the storyline overall)/thriller (because of the elements in the plot of that nature and the way suspence is built with sound, lighting, dialogue and plot).

It's a strong low budget movie that is recommended in particular to art students and to the moviebuffs. It is not a light movie, so don't watch it if you are comedic relief.

Plotline:
Here you get to meet a want to be artist, which only finds his art and meaning once he finds a black hole that speaks to him (read; the abyss, the inner darkness). We then get to follow him through his actions afterwards, finding love and it's impact on the interaction with the hole (read; inner darkness) and his actions towards it. It basically turns into a characterstudy if you agree with what I've written.

Pro's
Production
Directing (probable)
Cinematography
Acting (relative to budget)

Con's
Not enough time to fill the path it sets - deeper emotional lows would have made the difference clearer and strengthened the movie overall. Higher highs would not have been as effective but would also serve the same point.

*Note that i did not watch the whole movie (2/3's +), I've seen enough complicated movies to read out the subplot (underlying meaning) decently fast.

[EDIT] Might have to raise this from a strong 7 to an 8.

I definitely agree! Most reviews have focused on the sex scene or the fact that the hole isn't explained, which is missing the point of the story entirely. You should however, watch the end because there have been conflicting opinions on how it is left. *spoiler* I personally believe she dies, but one reviewer said Herman chose the struggling artist life over staying with the hole.

This should've went at the beginning of whatever it was I just read.

I watched about half of it and did jump through (watching parts) of the rest (doing some other things partly on the side), but I believe in honesty - so i still put that note in there.

@Faithvoconnor
Yeah the "sex scene" is a talking point as it can be read differently;
The first way to read it should be as an artist on purpose getting joy from creating inner darkness as it will strengthen the work s/he does. You could put it really crudely as giving yourself (inner voice) a BJ then reguritating the result and getting payed to do so (which would then be a comment on artists facing the inner struggle for money instead of willingness to enlight themselves).

You could also put it as the artist just encouraging unhappiness sabotaging for her / himself to gain greater success.

Or simply that you cannot help venturing deeper into the darkness once you've found it and what you loose on that route to possible greatness in your working life.

I think those three are the most likely interpretations.

[EDIT] Watched the end and I think this is how to interpret it;
We get to see his uncle pick up a peacock eye (representing status quo; pyramid/eye) in the water (out in the wild/jungle), as if he accepted the daily struggle (hobbes war if i may), taking the easy route he gets to see the beuty in life (or has time to).
Then we see Hermann who looks at a painting of a peacock and chooses to discard it and places the frame over the dark hole. That is him choosing the inner darkness (read; exploring the abyss) he is stuck to see the dark side of the world (represented with the apartment). This could also be his gf reaching out to "take his darkness away" - introduce happiness or share his burden and doing so he pulls away from her (she "burns" her fingers) after they argue and then they split up as he chooses what is for most the darkness (and for the few who find their way through it, never really ending inner peace - for good and bad).

So i think he is searching in the abyss, well, until he finds the answer within the darkness that is.

So you just reviewed a movie you didn't really finish?

Touch darkness and darkness touches you back.

LOL!?!

I love how people come on here and play at being an intellectual.

Yes the first post I did not, after I did as noted.

Would it have been better to lie like many others would have?
I watched the clear majority of the movie but had the decency to note to anyone reading that there was a chance I did not read the subplot properly due to not having watched 100% of it (but more than 66% of it).

@MadRotaryOne_DDCgod
And we have a fanboy, coming in going straight for ad hominem without even noting what part of the review you had a problem with. Dishonest to say the least.

Here's some advise for you, my friend: DON'T WRITE REVIEWS IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE ENTIRE MOVIE!

reply

I don't know you (thus I am not your friend or enemy, judging by the shouts I'd asume you were aiming to be the latter), PLEASE READ THE FOLLOW-UP POST AND STOP TYPING LIKE THIS IN CAPS, IT DOES NOT MAKE YOUR POINT ANY MORE VALID.

I've as written viewed the clear majority of it, please adress where on the ACTUAL points that I've made that I've gone wrong...

Yeah, if you wanna keep look like an idiot it's fine by me. But know that it's your own fault.

Also, I'm not your "enemy", you are nothing to me. A faceless whatever on the internet. Enjoy your life!

Feel free to explain how being honest makes me look like an idiot. Do you usually stereotype the majority of writers for papers and other places that type up a handful reviews per day, some will undoubtedly be from movies they have not fully watched or probably done something meanwhile they did watch it...

So before you go on your way, specify where in my actual views on the movie I've missed or made an error regarding the movie itself...

If not you are just showing up out of the blue and screaming out your opinion.
The notion isn't that I've just viewed 15 minutes of the movie and then written a review, as written i viewed the clear majority, i typed that down so as to clear that up if any missconceptions had been made.
I then later returned and watched the ending as a discussion arose. I don't see your problem with me for being up front with the actions I've taken, if anything it shows that the writer does care about the reader... I'd rather be honest to people than make small unnecessary lies or for that matter get some steam off myself and dump it onto random strangers because I canno't deal with whatever problem constructively, by myself, with near/loved ones or for whatever reason.

This is not to neglect the intelligence of the movie, nor the production of it. It is very well made and I gave it a high rating. Neither is it to belittle those who find it to be one of the best or worst movies they've ever viewed.
The script will most likely give the writer another shot or two, the production will definitively give the producer more work and the acting is above average for a movie like this.

[EDIT] Some parts of it could be considered spoilers if you did not watch a trailer or read about the movie, so I've increased the spoilerfield in the review and changed the title to make it unclear - if that was what annoyed you. If you read a spoiler within those two fields and it ruined some of your experience of the movie; I am sorry.

how does shide look like an "idiot"? they are attempting to decipher a film as they were watching it. and then later edited the post. wouldn't it make more sense for YOU to engage in a discussion rather than call names and run away to the safety of anonymity? if anything, doing what you did puts you in question more than shide.

so, what about it? did you even see the film? could you tell us what you thought about it in more than a few words?

reply

Formulating a review off of "66%" of the movie, huh? That's ... oddly specific. You do realize the ends of movies are integral to the narrative, right?

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

reply

Spot on - how anyone can watch 66% and then come out with a review is a bit silly but then perhaps he was trying to comment in an artistic way about the duality of art and its transcendence over narrative and plotline - or maybe its a load of old bollox.

Whatever , its still a rather intriguing and definitely avante garde little gem!
The whole movie was about sex - from the orgy in the gallery to the sausages his mum makes to the hole in the wall and the proto-testicles he pulls out of it! Even the desperate woman wanting sex from him - the whole movie is a veritable smorgasbord of sex and hidden desires! The peacock, well its pretty obvious if you have studied a bit of psychology - all related to sex and selection.

Just google "The peacock's tail of altruism" and you will see what i mean.
Clever writer , clever movie!!

Let me quote myself:

...(but more than 66% of it)

I watched about half of it and did jump through (watching parts) of the rest (doing some other things partly on the side), but I believe in honesty - so i still put that note in there.

The very ending was skipped (dealing in a very small part in relation to the time skipped in the start), not the full ending (so it's down to how you interpret it), most time that was skipped was in the beginning (the build up, the preconception you get told to have versus our lead).

The analogy to the peacock's tail is striking and also in line with what I've written... Though it does not explain the relevance of the jungle scene which is in relation to the peacock we get shown.

Quoting myself again...
Watched the end and I think this is how to interpret it;

One last thing: omendata - how you choose to ask the question decides what answer you will get; staying away from Freud might grant another answer to this movie for you.

And yeah I agree which should shine clear through my posts, this movie was clearly above average when it comes to low budget movies. It also had a clear message about the cost of being a great artist in this case but that can be applied to whatever field (more or less).
