... I thought the old mans mining camp was so funky & told such a rich story ...
It reminded me of Seigleman, Az ....

Did I miss something saying she was ever actually once his wife . . . ?

It seemed like Charlie was in 'Nam - maybe fell in love with her there, came back to do gold mining or something - never found anything, and just became an old dreaming, crazy, broke bachelor ...

not sure if they say she was his wife in the film, but trust me she was.

It was Charlie's sex doll...get's lonely in the mine shaft. They edited out the scene where he was giving it to the sex doll, and upon completion, went to the top of the hill to have a smoke to symbolize another victory over his Real Doll, but that's when Michael Douglas shot him. Serves him right, the weirdo. Too bad they edited out that scene. It frankly made Charlie come across like a real creep he was, and actually had you feeling happy when Michael Douglas shot him, but also sad for Michael Douglas, because he didn't know Charlie was so creepy until he found that kid hiding in the mine shaft. That one sex doll scene was the opposite effect on the story they were trying to tell, and Michael Douglas was actually the hero in that version, so they edited it out. It would have been better with that scene in it, and would have made it a more complicated and morally ambiguous film. BOOO! :-0
