did you also like Max Payne?

they seem kinda similar.

Ehhh... how?

I assume that he's talking about the game, one man on revenge rampage throughout New York, working his way through a criminal organization to the boss.

I actually came here to see if anyone else noticed the similarities to Max Payne, the video game.

Both are neo-noir-ish stories set in New York drawing on elements of martial arts action movies, especially John Woo films and The Matrix.

The hero is trying to retire from a violent profession to a more peaceful life at home when suddenly hit by a tragedy that pulls him back in.

The hero loses a loved one at the hands of the criminal underworld (Payne loses his wife and baby, Wick loses his dog and car, lol).

The hero wages an impossible one-man war against a powerful organization.

The Russian mob is one of the main villains despite both heroes being friends/colleagues with the boss (Wick: Viggo, Payne: Vlad).

There's the raid on the nightclub (Wick: Red Circle, Payne: Ragnarock).

There's the femme fatale the hero crosses paths with (Wick: Perkins, Payne: Mona).

There's the incompetent, loudmouth underling of the mob boss (Wick: Iosef, Payne: Vinnie Gognitti).

Older mentor figures watching our hero's back (Wick: Marcus and Winston, Payne: Woden).

Popping painkillers to fight through injuries.

The font of the subtitles in Wick and the way visual emphasis is placed on certain words is eerily similar to the "graphic novel" scenes in Max Payne 3.

Lastly, both end with the hero trying to stop the main villain from taking off in a helicopter.

Really enjoyed the film. This is the film that Max Payne should have been, if only it had a bit more of the noir atmosphere thrown in.

It was what Max Payne (the movie) should have been.

uwe boll deserves the chair.

I liked Max Payne the video game but the film is terrible. Marky Mark as Max, WTF were they thinking?

reply

Just saw the movie and was thinking that it's like a video game. The story, the characters, the setting, the action, all felt very video gamey to me, but instead of playing you're just passively watching it, which made it boring.
