The Seagull's Laughter

While watching the trailer for The Dressmaker, I was immediately reminded of the Icelandic film Mávahlátur (2001) (The Seagull's Laughter).

Synopsis: It is 1953, and Freya, who had gone to America as an officer’s bride, has returned home to begin a new life. She moves into a small house of distant relatives in a quiet fishing village within Iceland. But unlike the drab, plump girl who went abroad, Freya, now in her twenties, is a stunningly beautiful woman. With her long chestnut brown hair, slender figure, and chic American fashions, she is somewhat of a mystery to the women of the household, including the inquisitive eleven-year-old Agga, and especially to the men of the community. But as Agga soon notices, strange things have been happening since Freya’s arrival. Women are asserting their independence and men are mysteriously keeling over. Is Freya a murderess? A goddess of love? These are questions young Agga would very much like to have answered.

Just an observation!

Many thanks, I've added that to my watchlist. No idea where I'm going to source it though :-(

The Seagull's Laughter was a good movie. I don't want to spoil it by talking about the plot though.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

I was watching the trailer for "The Dressmaker" and totally thought to myself how much just the trailer reminded me of "The Seagull's Laughter". I LOVED that movie.....one of those movies you just never forget! Stumbled on it at the Library in their movie DVD foreign film section years ago, and what a treat of a movie it turned out to be. It's so cool that someone else picked up on the similarity. Looking forward to seeing the movie for a real comparison.....
