Macbeth or The Mikado?

Can someone explain why Tilly's townfolks are supposedly dressed for Macbeth and, when they enter the theater, The Mikado is being performed? As for their costumes, they look too weird for Macbeth, since they seem to be eighteenth century French.

I assumed she purposely did it to mess with them.

The competition was an Eisteddfod, where each group chose their own piece to perform. Winyerp chose 'The Mikado', whereas Dungatar chose 'Macbeth'.

When the Dungatar women approached Tilly to do the Macbeth costumes, Trudy showed Tilly illustrations in a book and said they wanted the costumes to be like those. Tilly made the comment 'Baroque', indicating her surprise about their choice.

so did she make the costumes for Macbeth also? I know she did the Mikado costumes which were beautiful, while the Macbeth costumes were a bit over the top and much, especially for that play. I thought it was funny when Tilly said "Baroque?" and the townspeople told her that "It is Shakespeare" kind of indicating, that the man in the ruffled collar had all his plays be modeled after the style of the time.

Also found it funny that they didnt think Tilly was cultured to know, but in reality she did. She even quoted the play.

But my main question is, that did she end up doing the costumes for Macbeth also with Mikado?

reply

Good question.

I assumed that she didn't.

But perhaps she did, acquiescing to the townspeople's request for 'Baroque', while also doing the other town's costumes as well.

I think she did. Near the end, when she is dousing the house with gasoline, you can see sketches of those over the top Baroque style costumes on the walls of her workspace.

Haven't seen the film in a while but I thought Tilly refused to do the towns' peoples' dresses and was offended that they even asked. I thought the other dressmaker (the awful one who was drafted in to rival Tilly) did the ghastly Shakespearian dresses and Tilly did the Mikado ones - hence those dresses looking gorgeous (maybe I'm wrong and Tilly did both designs).
