Misleading ads?

The marketing for this film seems to promote a somewhat light-hearted dramedy instead of the rather dark drama I'm hearing it really is. I wonder if this will create a backlash.

reply

I felt this way. I saw it and I thought it was like sitting through two hours of therapy. I would have liked it better (and still gone to see it) if I was prepared for how heavy it was. The trailer shows the few light moments in the whole movie.

Bad marketing move.

reply

This movie sucked!

reply

Definitely. I would've seen it for KST alone. Also b/c it's set in Paris. But I was certainly NOT ready for how dark and depressing it got. I would've chosen a different time to see it, when I was in a more appropriate mood.

reply

Totally misleading. Not a comedy at all. I expected to see a lot of zingers from Maggie Smith a la "Downton Abbey." No luck. I think it might have been better on stage. It just didn't translate well into a film.

reply

A cinematic bait and switch. It's being marketed like FRENCH KISS, but has more in common with THE FLAT. It's well acted, and to it's credit, there is no gratuitous shot of the Eiffel Tower to tell us the setting is Paris. However, make no mistake. It is NOT the romantic comedy the ads and trailer present it to be.

reply

I totally agree. There was no way the ads prepared me for this movie. It was disconcerting because there was really no humor at all in this movie.

reply

The ads were very misleading. Not right, given the price of admission these days. The promos are nothing like the movie.

Can't stand Kevin Kline he reminds me of another very self indulgent actor William Hunt. Went for Maggie Smith, but even she couldn't save this.

Very sorry I gave this flick my money, time, and a chance.

reply

The only thing I like Kevin Kline in these days are his vocal turns on "Bob's Burgers."

reply

I did think it was going to be a comedy based on the trailer, and I didn't like it much when I saw it. I found the story very depressing, even though they try to lighten it a bit at the end.

reply

Even here there are some misleading reviews talking about the fun they had!
It wasn't a bad story, for sure it's no Woody Allen's or a Fish Called Wanda.

reply

Trailers lie. Their only purpose is to get people to part with their money at the box office. People who go to see a movie based on a trailer deserve everything they get.

reply

nonsense. a trailer normally at least gives you a rough idea of what type of film you are going to see, they are not all deliberately misleading like this one was.

reply

Oh I think they are deliberately misleading, as I said their function is to get you to part with your money. Which is why I never watch a trailer when making a decision to see a movie.

reply

well, I've never seen one before that so completely misrepresented the character of the fillm as this one did. i have often seena. Trailer that made me think i would like to see the film, but none that turned out to be so different from what the trailer reprewented.

reply

A friend saw Under The Skin based on the trailer and was unpleasantly surprised. The trailer made it look like it was an action sci-fi film which it definitely isn't. I never go to see a film based on the trailers.

reply

I never saw the trailer; I wanted a movie I could watch with my 85 year-old mother on Christmas, that was not R-rated or violent, and I watched it mainly because of Kevin Kline and the PG-13 rating, and the one or two sentence description on Amazon.

Trailers usually give away too much of a plot, so I avoided it. Either way, it was a great movie.
