Woman singing on the Seine (spoiler)

What was opera song that the woman was singing on the Seine? It was familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. Did it have any special meaning for the film' story?

reply

She was probably singing, because she wasn't part of the main story line.

Don Giovanni is an opera about licentious, selfish behavior which might be seen to be Klein's father--
and revenge and forgiveness--
while those themes are found in the movie I don't know that it fits that well--
since Klein is not Don Giovanni--he has been sinned against...
and why he should forgive Maggie Smith is beyond my belief...

"and why he should forgive Maggie Smith is beyond my belief.."

that's relatively easy to understand......he (that's Kline btw) discovers that his father was far more human than he ever knew and...he falls for her daughter!

Actually, she was part of the main story line as one of the main story lines is Paris itself. She epitomizes the charm, wonder and quirkiness that is Paris. I once stood for an hour and listened to a female all-woodwind nonet playing Django Reinhardt tunes on a sidewalk in the Marais District....they were part of my Paris story line that day.

Funny....I think it was the one scene that should have been cut from the movie.

That is exactly what I got out of those scenes too, although the Don Giovanni reference makes sense too. And what a beautiful voice she had. It was a nice, simple scene when Mathias sang with her, they sounded good together! I really liked those scenes with her.
