It just seemed handled better overall. There were moments in the first that felt a little too campy, and it seems like they largely avoided those this time around.

shareInteresting, my wife and I were the opposite. We watched Divergent last night and then Insurgent this evening and we both thought the first was better. (Neither of us have read the book, so have no investment in the plot changes)
I thought Divergent was better filmed, characters were more defined, there was more chemistry between the characters. Insurgent felt much more special effects heavy, felt more rushed and crammed, with not enough time being spent on scenes or people. Also not sure I would believe that the humans that created the box, would devise a device that basically would kill people trying to open it.
Though stupid in its own right, Insurgent the second movie showed that the constructs setup in the first movie were so seriously flawed that they could never survive as a basis for society, i.e. Insurgent suceeded in making both movies look stupid.
Yes that box was totally nonsensical, how is it going to know whether any particular sim test was passed?
In the sim when the subject completed it, that faction lit up saying it was a success. The other subjects passed some, but when it came to others, they failed and then died

Agree, they were both pretty bad, felt like a terrible episode of Dark Angel. But at least part 2 had some sort of story at all.
