Pronunciation Nazis PLEASE Get Over Yourselves

(1) Pronunciation is not a marker of intelligence or education level, but, rather, environment. In fact, most of us can identify a person's geographic origin by their pronunciation of certain words (like Canadians with the word "about").

(2) There are actually four correct pronunciations for the word Erudite, depending on the part of the world in which it is used. Since most of the key actors are not American, it makes the most sense to use the preferred English(UK) pronunciation, AIR-you-dyte.

(3) You should really take a hard look at the quality of your own life if you feel the need to harp on the pronunciation (or mispronunciation) of a word.

yes god forbid a talky should have proper pronunciation, lets go back to silent movies. And they say it as Eriadite, thats wrong in any accent.

DevastatngDiva,

Do you really not see the irony of your fight for acceptance of multiple (yet wrong) pronunciations of Erudite? (Erudite - the Faction of people having the highest level of intelligence.)

Are you unaware that you're basically calling the Divergent-trilogy's author a "Pronunciation Nazi"? SHE has been bothered enough by the increasing mispronunciation of the Factions' names (as well as other names/words used in her books) that she has a thread on her site devoted just to correct pronunciations.

It is always sad to me that too loud a voice is heard fighting for the acceptance of society's lowest common denominator, especially because once the current 'lowest' becomes the average, new levels of low are then revealed to ultimately become 'acceptable', and so on, and so on.

😞

I just smiled when I saw this statement. I am in agreement with you WatchCat. How hard is it for them to pronounce Erudite properly and then the irony of the most intelligent faction not being able to do it? LOL! Now please let me say though that while watching the movie I didn't know they were pronouncing it wrong as I knew nothing or remembered nothing of this movie being part of a series of movies or books and so had no reference to look at to know they were saying this wrong. With it being said wrong it did not take away from the enjoyment I got from the movie.

Air-ee-yoo-dite is the AMERICAN pronunciation of the word "erudite".

Air-yoo-dite is the BRITISH pronunciation of the same word.

You and Taticat (same person?), Kaskait, Mardelle, and all of the other quarter wits acting like the grammar police on IMDB should really get a life! :(

The American author of the series favors the British pronunciation and appears to imply it is the only correct version. Not so.

Erm...no. There is no BrE/AmE at work here, there is only illiterate, self-absorbed sheeple on the one hand and people who accept that some common rules are necessary for groups to get along. One of these rules is that you don't get to pronounce words in any way that strikes your fancy.

In other news, no; I am not whatever other person also.

Fwiw, I am a US citizen, but was educated with Commonwealth English (and prefer logical punctuation, just as a side note), and remember erudite as a vocab word at some point in grade school; this is hardly a new or rare word. Consider me - and everyone else who is annoyed by the mispronunciation - a grammar Nazi all you want, but hearing this needless stupidity over and over in the movie seriously detracts from our enjoyment, especially considering the absurdity of the Erudite faction mispronouncing their own damned name.

We do not have to dumb our world down so as to make morons feel better about themselves.

Never heard "Air-ee-yoo-dite" until these movies, definitely not American.

This is American:

The link you gave is from England/Britain/UK/whatever the freak you call yourselves. None of the characters speak British so that's why the pronunciation of erudite was out of place. In any case, it is wrong and you've revealed yourself to be someone who needs to get out more. So save up some quid or stones or pounds or whatever and try to do it.

I have lived in the US my entire life and I have never heard anyone pronounce the word with 4 syllables.

Why in the world would the word "Erudite" have an "ee" syllable between the Air" syllable and the "yoo" syllable?

reply

Or in Australia air-roo-dite which is implied by how it is spelt or air-ra-dite, and the British pronunciation can also be air-ra-dite. Some people are like Mrs Hyacinth Bucket insisting her name is pronounced Boo-kay or beauque. I'm surprised Americans don't pronounce it as er-rud-it-ee or er-rud-it-tey. I've always pronounced it as air-roo-dite because that is how it was pronounced by my English teacher and the pronunciation guide we were given. English is one of the few languages you can get away with various pronunciations of some words, without calling someone's mother an offspring of a cat infested goat.

Really - IQ per se? Should't the law keeper, or the government also be recruited from the smartest. I thought the Ken/Erudites were the class of scientists.

The extra syllable drives me nuts. There is no sense in it.

I've hated both films and I don't even understand this point of debate.

Different pronunciations are viable. The end. Source? Bachelors in Literature. Second source? Girlfriend's Bachelors in Linguistics.

reply

No. In this case, I am the end source with a Lit.D. degree. The word has 4 syllables. Fuck off.
