I'm confused, I thought Four...(possible spoilers)

was Divergent? He wasn't under the mind control was he? I read on here that he was under the mind control until Tris touched his hand?

reply

He was Divergent. It cannot be a gaffe. He lied deliberately. Then the Judge asked a leading question to Tris, "Did Four just say that you woke him up?" Her answer: "Yes." Truthful. I think there must be shenanigans going on that Tris doesn't know about. So much for no more secrets.

I'm so glad you asked this question. I've been wondering all night!

reply

He wasn't under the mind control. He was pretending he was, like Tris, so no one would notice that he was really awake.

As for his being divergent, that's a more complicated answer that gets into a bunch of spoilery stuff from the third book that really doesn't make much sense or amount to anything other than a lazy retcon.

*spoilers*

he isn't divergent. If you have read the book, it says that he finds out that he's not divergent. He only shows certain divergent traits (like being able to resist serum) without being divergent.

is this in the 3rd film explained?

reply

Not that the first 40-50 or so minutes had been Masterpiece Theatre or anything, but this was the exact point where the film really fell apart for me.

reply

The way I understand it, he isn't as divergent as Tris, but he is divergent enough to resist the mind control serum. As for Tris waking him up, I assumed that referred to when Tris brings Caleb, her father, and Marcus into Dauntless to rescue Four from Jeanine. Remember, at this point, Jeanine has used some specially formulated serum to put Four in a sim, which is when Tris finds him and the two of them fight until she turns a gun on herself to assure him that she's real (and not a sim) in a last ditch effort to wake him up. I figured that was the moment in reference, not the moment on the train.

reply

I didn't think this was hard. There's different degrees of being divergent. Four is divergent. He's just not as divergent as Tris.
