Poor and nonsensical characterization

I don't get it! So, Tris is 100% pure divergent, and yet she cannot even go through the motions and fit in at Amity with "peace and love" and all that. Worse yet, apparently Peter and Four, who are barely (if at all) divergent seem to have no issues whatsoever with playing a role. Caleb, who logically should be exclusively all analytical and scientific considering his choice of Erudite, seemed the most divergent to me. He was more helpful, modest and selfless than Tris while still in Abnegation, and he acted the most peaceful and meek while hiding out in Amity. He was able to do the jumps and fight alongside his sister somewhat, despite a lack of training, at the end of the first one... so there is some aptitude in him for Dauntless as well. Yet, he's portrayed to be a mindless drone with faith in the faction system?!

Tris should have been a factionless outcast like Four's mom. Yet, she's somehow the savior instead, and can open the MacGuffin box?!

This concept had potential but there seems to be some disparity between what we're told about the characters, and what we're SHOWN. The author only has the courage to portray villains like Eric and Jeanine as "damaged" and thus factionalized, while everyone else acts divergent whether they are or not.
