Spike's a dog...

...I held out hope that this was just a rumor, but the trailer confirms it to be true. I can't help but feel a bit sick. He is the lead character's closest friend, and has always been treated as the equal that he is. In Friendship is Magic, he has a long, undeserved history of degradation, neglect, and abuse from the fandom and the characters. His transformation in EG basically a slap in the face to anyone who cares about him as a character. In Equestria, dragons are on par with ponies just as griffons, zebras, mules, etc are, so if Gilda, Zecora, or any other such characters show up as humans, it will demonstrate that the producers of Equestria Girls have no idea how to handle their property.

His expressive reactions during said trailer hint that he may still have his normal level of intelligence, though, and will therefore contribute to the plot of the movie as a character rather than a pet, the same way Salem did in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I desperately hope this is the case, just as I hope Twilight takes issue with his degraded evolutionary status like the fanbase initially did.

it's super upsetting to me too.

After turning into a dog in the movie he can still talk and has the same level of intelligence as when he was a dragon. If anything he just lost the ability to breath fire, but that's it. I think the reason he turned into a dog was because anyone from Equestria who travels to our world turns into an animal that exists here: Ponies turn into humans, and dragons (or at least small ones like Spike) turn into dogs. Trust me, it's no insult to the character.

Evil will always triumph because Good is dumb.

At least he maintained a level-headed character and didn't become an idiot or comic-relief. Probably the only really good thing about the movie, I'd say...

From what I hear, that was far from being the only good thing about it. I got wind of a few flaws, but with Meghan behind the curtain, it sounds like the movie was 100% FiM.

We should breath a sigh of relief that it was Meghan writing the script and not Merriwether Williams. No offense to her, but she only has a loose understanding of the universe and zero grasp of the characters. She should be writing silly children's shows that are meant for nothing more than entertaining the little ones, not Friendship is Magic.
