Everyone's Thoughts?

The fandom as a whole seems really split right now. I'm just kind of curious to see what everyone's first impressions after watching the trailer. So, what do you think of Equestria Girls? Do you like it so far or not? Would you actually pay to see this?

I personally think it looks kind of fun. The best part of the trailer was seeing human!Twilight act all awkward and clumsy, and that has a lot of potential for gags. I guess I'm optimistic about the whole thing. Sure, I'm not exactly fond of dog Spike, and I can't say that the designs of humans are good either, but I think it'll be worth a shot. No way am I ever seeing it in theaters (the nearest showing is about an hours drive away anyway) but I'm kind of intrigued.

Why does life have to be so ironic?!

reply

I will pay to see it for the simple fact that it is My Little Pony, regardless if it looks good or not. Honestly though it looks exactly like Monster High, just a bit ponyfied.

You have low standards.

I liked the concept, but the execution was not what I was hoping for. I don't understand the big deal with 20-30 something Bronie's having a conniption over the humanization of the characters. The show wasn't originally intended for them anyway, so to the fanatics who hijacked this franchise as their own need to step down off their high horse and chill.

The alternate universe concept wasn't handled well in my POV. Instead of having just Twilight go to a human world that is populated by convenient bi pedal counterparts of everybody else in the series, they should of had the Mare 6 travel together to the human world that is populated by unrelated characters. The 6's reaction to the human world would of been entertaining and giving them each a little bit of time adjusting while trying to get the crown back would of been fun.

I think they needed to put a little more thought into this one. Then again, it wasn't intended for theatrical release so it is what it is. 6 stars is fair enough a rating.

For me Equestria Girls is just another proof that neither Hasbro nor DHX understands what the quality of the show is. They don't understand the fandom at all.

Judging from the episodes/characters development (Fluttershy for example was a sophosticated character, well developed, with a deeper insight of character development, now she is just a cheap stereotype of shyness, nothing more, same development with Pinkie Pie acting only silly and nothing else) and the fact that an abomination like Equestria Girls is possible leads me to believe, that the spirit of Lauren Faust is slowly fading away and I fear that this wonderful show ends up as just another brain-dead, soulless, one-dimensional show to sell crappy toys to an unambitious viewership (kids or adults - just being a kid does not mean you don't appreciate quality !!, for example like The Muppet Show, a quality show for kids and adults or the movies Coraline or Princess Mononoke which can be enjoyed by kids and adults as well).

Furthermore the merchandise of MLP is of the lowest quality possible, absolute rubbish in any aspect, crap neither kids nor adult fans deserve.

PS: I haven't lost hope for the show yet, I just hope they correct the bad development in future episodes.

It seems underwhelming. I'm surprised that it has gained a cinematic release - I was expecting it to be straight to DVD. I'll watch it before forming my opinion but the idea just seems like that it's plucked from fanfiction. If Hasbro have made a MLP movie, why didn't they base it in Equestria with the locations and charactters the fans have come to love? It seems like jumping the shark, which could - worst case scenario - ruin the FiM series for many fans.

I'm curious and hope for Equestria Girls to deliver something redeeming (it wouldn't be impossible - who wasn't skeptical of FiM's quality before watching the series?) so I will end up watching it eventually, but the trailer has not done it any favours. I would much prefer a FiM film.

reply

Not just no, *beep* no. I watch MLP because the characters are fun and well written and this loks like it's been dumbed down to the level of Monster High or that carton about the mall with the teenagers. Ugh. No, I want a real FiM movie with the quality of the season 2 opener or ender. I'll not be seeing it in theaters, certainly. MAYBE when I'm bored out of my skull and have exhausted all other options on Netflix I'll watch it out of morbid curiosity.

reply

I really don't know what to think. Personally, I don't have a problem with the humanization aspect as long as the story is solid—but based on the trailer, that may not happen.

In any case, I will see this in theaters. And I'm taking my wife with me. (We don't have kids.)

reply

I hate the idea.

- It's "My Little Pony", not "My Little Person". A big reason the show works is because they are ponies, with very varied abilities, heritages, and personalities. This is important in keeping the show tolerable.

- The setting of the movie? A prom. In high-school. The cliché is just so tired and worn that no amount of good writing is going to overcome it. There was a huge opportunity here to have something interesting going on, such as Discord wreaking pseudo-havoc in the Earth realm, and the girls had to fix it. Become human as a result, enlist the help of a few natural humans, perhaps share the secret... but, no. Predictable crap.

- Spike is a dog... just, no. Spike could have been an exchange student, at least. Chinese dragon, perhaps? Instead, he's demoted to a pet. Great.

So many of the fans are going to be turned off by this...

All you fans of the show who are hating the film just after watching the trailer, I implore you to please go to the link below, watch the video, and really listen to and think about what this guy has to say:

Come on, look at those dolls and think for a moment what they stand for and then tell me this is not the end and an absolute contradiction to what Faust meant it to be ;-) :

As someone who's actually seen the movie and isn't just conjecturing based on trailers and merch, I can tell you for a fact that it's every bit as high-quality and good-spirited as the show itself. Meghan and Jayson and their crew blew it out of the water. Don't make the mistake of judging the movie before giving it a chance.

reply

That's great. I haven't seen this yet, but all of the reviews I've seen thus far think that the movie is either amazing or just decent, and I'm perfectly happy with that. They could have done this much, much worse. It seems as if they did the best they could with the premise they got.

Waiting for an online leak of this is torture. The nearest theatre playing this is too far away.

Why does life have to be so ironic?!

reply

Yeah, my fiancee and I watched it the other week, and we both felt very "meh" about it. Both Sunshine Shimmer and Twilight's new love interest were paper thin characters, and it's especially bad in the case of Sunshine Shimmer, who has no motivation other than "I'm gonna rule Equestria! Also I'm gonna be the school bitch at this high school!" The plot is tired and cliched, and the setting and characters lack the magic and creativity of the show. Some effort by the writers do shine through for me, because some of the dialogue is clever, but they were not given much to work with here. This has "executive meddling" written all over it. I'm also pretty sure I liked it more than my fiancee did. I thought it was okay in a generic late 90's-esque cartoon about kids in school, but she thought it was pretty bad, heh...

Cynicism is easy.

reply

It's ok, but I don't wanna see any reference to this movie in season 4.

reply

Why not? This movie is about showing the reasons WHY Twilight IS ready to be a princess, its hugely relevant to season 4.

Do I want this other world to become a big part of the show? Absolutely not. But I don't think there is any reason to dismiss it as never happening, it stands up as well as any episode IMO. Then again, there are still people bemoaning her becoming an Alicorn in the first place and claiming that Magical Mystery Cure never happened in their mind.

Personally, I think it gives the writers more to work with, which is in no way a bad thing.

reply

Ok at best.

Didnt like the friends having the same names but that can be overlooked I guess.

My biggest problem was how Twilight being from another dimension was so easily accepted by everyone. Plus Pinkie Pie having guessing in great detail who she really was. I know it was in joking fashion but it also proves the writers didn't care at all to create any reasoning.

I was never excited for this but always planned to see it anyway. I thought it would be decent at least but it was quite dumb and could have been much better.

reply

But how would YOU have explained it in 30 seconds in a way that kids can understand without getting bored?

Her friends instantly accepting the truth while yes its really weird, but its no less so than half of what happens in the show. Its no different to Sunset Shimmer suddenly wanting to learn friendship and everyone accepting that, even after all she has done.

Ultimately as this is a re-imagining of the pilot episode from the show it has the same flaws, eg Nightmare Moon instantly turning back into Princess Luna with no explanation for why the evil seems to disappear. Its been strongly hinted however that we will see more of what REALLY happened here in season 4, so it may very well be that Equestria Girls makes more sense then. After all, the purpose of it was to try to get people interested in season 4 and sell more toys, so it makes sense to leave you wanting more.

Of course there is also the key point of the show, Friendship is Magic. Its a dual meaning, as in friendship is something everyone should aspire towards as its rewarding and helpful in life. But also the literal, that friendship in the show actually powers the elements of harmony. Once you bring magic into the equation, all bets are off anyway because ANYTHING can happen.

Its not like Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy even seemed that surprised when they suddenly sprouted wings because, you know, its a cartoon and not everything HAS to make sense. Its meant to be good fun while teaching good life lessons, something it rarely fails to achieve.

^ I don't know how I would have explained it but taking more time to do so wouldn't have made it boring. Alot of kids movies are longer than this.

Like I said its weird that everyone easily accepted it all. Even Sunset Shimmer turning into a big monster. After everything is said and done no one is the least bit phased by any of it.

I personally would not have had any of the secret revealed because it takes place in the real world.

I would have had the "power of friendship" message be done some other way. Like having her bring Sunset Shimmer and them back together through the course of the story. Ending with her giving back the crown and Twilight leaving because she was only a visitor or something.

And If you wanna get really technical now the portal to ponyville was exposed. Does this mean anyone can pass through?...granted only every 30 moons or whatever. I dont remember if they explained this.

reply

Except its not "THE" real world, is just "a" parallel world populated with human versions of the same characters. The fact the element of harmony still works, everyone is still pastel coloured, they STILL are able to represent the elements of harmony (which is why they still linked to the Magic element to vanquish Sunset Shimmer).

Was it a bit of a weak ending? Sure. But its meant to tie into the shows mythology not real-world, so its fine. Some of the limitations are clearly to keep it relevant to the show, to show the parallels of this world with Equestria rather than it being completely different. I found it fun reliving the pilot episode from a different perspective.

My biggest complaint in fact is I don't understand why Sunset Shimmer effectively turned into a demon just by being exposed to the magic element, I wish that would have been explained more. But I guess they are playing on the whole "power corrupts", at least if you do not have friends to keep you grounded.

Could it have been better? Absolutely. Hopefully if they do another it will remain in Equestria and be a part of the shows canon so they can build on what has come before, rather than having to re-tell the same story in a different setting. However I disagree with anyone who thinks it was bad.

There is no accounting for taste, some people think season 3 was awful but I think it has several gems in there and like it overall and am hugely looking forward to season 4. Even if Equestria Girls wasn't perfect, the music alone makes up for any negatives.

Uh Im pretty sure it does take place in our world even if they don't right out say it. The skin colors are just for fun like they were in Nick's Doug. Even if everyone is a human counterpart to a pony doesn't mean its not our world. The names are the same which is dumb but now we're over thinking it.

I think the element of harmony can still work considering the crown is the main piece. Magic working in our world isn't out of the norm.

I love the show and I'll usually defend any plot point and whatnot in a given show/movie but its obvious they only made this because of fans who liked humanized ponies and kids who probably dress up like them. Not ears and tails. I mean colors and such.

If it was meant to be anything more it would have been longer and better written. Its fine with me. Its done and out of the way. I just hope it doesn't creep into the show. They said it won't so here's hoping.
