Regarding the 'friends, but we're not friends' storytelling

This is the one thing about this film that just bugs me the most (aside from the 'how did Sunset Shimmer know the Elements of Harmony had been reunited, and that Twilight's had been fashioned into a crown if she's been away from Equestria for so long' question).

Twilight notices that the human versions of her friends aren't friends anymore, yet I found it odd that given the circumstances that they are upset at each other about, they'd still hang out with each other.

Take for example, Pinkie Pie's lines when Twilight mentions Fluttershy telling about signing up for the Fall Formal:

"Fluttershy, huh? Don't let the whole shy thing fool you...she can be a real meanie!"

And yet these girls all (with the exception of Rainbow Dash) just rally around Twilight after the whole video posting by Sunset. One would assume given how upset they are with each other, they would not congregate over this new girl.

Unless this is the film's way of saying how Sunset Shimmer is a dividing force, and Twilight is a unifying force.
