Lazy design puts me off.

There is this notion that Bronies dislike Equestria Girls because Hasbro has defined the human form of the Ponies and shattered our hopes, dreams and what not. But apart from the abysmal and generic setting of the movie (high school ... did we really need that?) the design is the biggest hit in the teeth for me :).

Especially the skin colors. Twilight is a purple girl? Rainbow Dash is blue? Really. That just screams lazy design to me. Because the colors do nooooot match, the clash. It looks weird.

The argument can be made that the ponies in all weird colors looks weird too. And they do to some people. But I guess it's not completely fair because Equestria is a land of fantasy while the movie takes place in a dull high school :) .

Cookie-cutter (potential) boy friend
Generic high school setting
Weird design choices

Does anyone agree?

I'd have to agree that the skin color is a bit bothersome and strange, their hair is more than enough to remind us who they are in human form.

I never bothered me in Doug, and it doesn't bother me here. They probably did it to avoid any controversy over skin color. Wouldn't it be odd if every single person at their high school was white?

I don't really see what's so "lazy" about the designs. I actually think they're pretty ingenious. Look at Twilight's outfit for example. Notice how her cutie mark is split in half thanks to the ruffles in her skirt. This could be symbolic of the fact that she's out of her element in this strange new world. All of their outfits are designed from their personalities and I think it works.

As for their bodies all being the same, that's how the ponies are anyway, so it's not exactly a change in artistic design (other than being a different species).

It's a good way to avoid real skin color and the issues that can be brought up because of it. Keep the girls the same color as their pony versions and no one will question what race anyone is.

I've said this on DeviantArt, but it's pretty pathetic when brony/pegasister FANART looks better than the actual characters in the movie (even if their skin colors never match those of their pony selves)! I mean, I'm still of the opinion that this train wreck was just fanservice to those of us who like to draw humanized versions of the characters.

No it isn't pathetic at all as you are missing some VERY important points.

How long did that one single fan art take to draw?
How many of those fan arts are done in FLASH?
Did they have to keep into consideration the complexity of animating their design?
Did they have to create every different angle the movie will need while again ensuring it animated seamlessly with every OTHER angle?

There are very good reasons for the design choices.

I would also like to point out that this is the same reason everyone is thin. I know people are moaning its not setting a good example for kids, but this isn't SUPPOSED to be reality. This must be the same crowd who complained that Looney Tunes wasn't setting a good example for kids.

The limitations of animating this at an affordable price means every character has to use the same template, which is why there aren't diverse body types. They aren't trying to say everyone should be thin, it was just necessary for the work flow of the movie. They do EXACTLY the same thing for the show but as they are all ponies you don't notice.

On the show it takes months to do a single episode (though obviously the departments work simultaneously so several episodes are being worked on at the same time) WITHIN these limitations. This is effectively a TV movie with a limited cinema release, it has to stay within the budget of that so has to be done the same way. If they did it to the standards some people are asking for they would have to delay season 4 for a year.

This might be a stupid thing to complain about, but yes, I completely agree with you on the lazy designs, ThirdSketch. And here I thought I was the only MLP fan that hated all of those Equestria Girls designs (well, all of them except for Sunset Shimmer's, hers looked okay).
