What's this about gulping air while singing?!

Do singers do this for a supposedly dramatic sound, or have they simply not been taught to sustain? In grade school chorus, we were taught how to space breathing. So many singers, as the woman in this, sound as if they're gasping for air all of the time~every three or four words, and it's unbelievably irritating! I actually had to mute when the singing was on.

This is not a new habit, but it seems to be getting worse, like dragging the voice, moaning and breaking their voices, as if that adds to a song. It doesn't!

I find it impossible to believe that they had a successful group if that's what they sounded like. very important: If you have a story about a singing group, get a believable bunch!
