White and Grey everywhere!!

All they do recently is paint their houses exterior grey and white, interior grey and white, with white cabinets and grey countertops.
These are the most boring looking houses I have ever seen!

reply

That's what is popular now. We're thinking of having a house built and every model we look at is grey and white. I don't mind it. I'm tired of the tans.

Season 7, and every color scheme is exactly the same as the years before. I'm not sure why this show is still on. Yes, Grey and white has been the most popular color the last 3 years but I think everyone so sick of this combo, especially if the whole house is only these colors from top to bottom. Grey and white is not the issue, it's their formulaic and boring use of it, house after house.

reply

I totally get what you are saying, but that's what's selling. They are in the business of remodeling and selling as quickly as possible so they are going to do what is pleasing to the most. I'm sick to death of the tans, so I want the white/grey combo, but I want something else too. Like a deep blue on one wall or the ceiling or something, not just the grey/white. Too boring. But doing it the way they are makes it pleasing to the most people and makes it easy for the buyer to paint just one wall with a personal choice.

When you are selling a house, you want neutral colors that will appeal to most buyers. I am a Realtor here in NH. I would even have to paint 3 rooms in my own house if my wife an I were to sell it, as we have used some bold colors.

There was an episode on recently where she said she was tired of doing beige all the time -- so she switched to gray all the time! I just think that gray doesn't seem very sunny California to me. Isn't West Coast light a warm yellowish light and East Coast light a cooler blueish light? Gray seems more East Coast to me (though I prefer beige myself.)

reply

If it's true that East coast light is cooler and West coast light is warmer, then West Coast houses would be better with grays than East coast houses -- you don't want to put gray paint in a cold light, it's too much "cold".

Then why do really sunny places (like the tropics, Mexico) favor bright colors in their decor and art?

reply

Bright colors reflect heat almost as well as white. Also, bright colors in a tropical place looks harmonious with the local colors in nature.

OTOH you don't see bright colors in colder climates for those very reasons -- poor heat absorption, looks weird in a temperate landscape.

So much gray in all their remodels! The gray tile with the mosaic insert in their bathrooms is so predictable and will look dated in just a few years. As a "designer" Christina is very one note.

reply

I prefer white cabinets, but I don't care for grey tiling. I like a warm green or light blue, but grey is neutral and 'neutral' appeals to more buyers.

Knock if off Napolean make yourself a dang quesadil-la!

reply

I prefer white cabinets too but would welcome more gray. Every home in my neighborhood has the same beige--light beige walls, cherry wood cabinets and stupid brown, tan and black granite counter tops. I would love a kitchen with white cabinets (glass doors!), gray slate floor and a plain, light colored counter top.

You never know when you may have to jam

I too am tired of all the gray, especially on the outside of the house. They paint the outside of every house gray. For me it looks like a primered car, unfinished. The houses look sad and odd especially because they are older homes, and don't look right painted gray. Some of the houses are crying to be yellow, blue or green. Nice happy neutral colors that brighten up the outside and the neighborhood.

Something amazing just happened on this week's episode -- Cristina actually had some cabinets with color!!!

I think this proves that someone on the show pays attention to these boards. They had to realize that Cristina was getting too one-note and predictable, so she was ordered to "spontaneously" change it up a little.

Just watch the 2 latest episodes and Cristina did both in Gray and White inside and outside.

I am starting to think she is color blind.

This show and Property Brothers are just about taking every house and transforming it into a white and gray trend showroom with shelves full of junk from Home Goods and backwards books. Supposedly the masses go for this crap.
