started off interesting and then quickly went downhill

If below is too long to read then just go rent “cabin in the woods” and “you’re next”.

I won’t even bother with easily spotted flaws in the flick (the kid instantly being swayed, a flare gun in a car, masks that are impossible to see through) instead, I’d like to point out how this story is just late overall.

Typically I’m not about comparing a flick to others because each movie really should stand on their own but the 2 movies I’m about to use are actually game changers and really pushed other horror flicks to be more creative. Something that Torment doesn’t do, instead it just thinks that being a low-budget home-invasion-flick will be enough to carry it.

The first flick is “Cabin in The Woods” (2012), a movie that not only exploited all the tropes of any given horror flick, it also gave them a greater purpose by explaining how they’re all connected and how motivation of the victims are actually a form of persuasion.

The second game changer was “You’re Next”(2011) a home invasion flick that actually humanized the “intruder” made them as mortal as their victims, actually, it made one of their victims more dangerous than the attackers. Not only was it nice to finally see the intruders as people who can be injured and killed but they had an actual motivation for their acts, not just for the sake of being crazy.

Both of these flicks have forced the horror genre to be more creative and when I see a flick that chooses to follow all the generic steps from the past decade then I know the creative team doesn’t even care about the genre, they’re just looking to get paid.

What we got in Torment was unmotivated unstoppable killers (again) and a family making a bunch of stupidly bad choices with ridiculous setups and situations.

If you paid 3D prices for a flick that wasn't filmed in 3D, you paid too much

While I agree with you that Torment is a poor movie, I disagree with your praises for the other two films. Kudos to Cabin in the Woods for trying something different, however, I still wouldn't consider it a great movie. You're Next, in my opinion, added absolutely nothing to the genre, and although it was a passable horror movie it was very cliched and generic and revealed the killer(s) far, far too early in the film and in doing so killing off all tension it may have had going for it at the time.
