Worst From Investigation Discovery

I have now watched five episodes of this crime, reality series and have serious doubts as to the qualifications of those who created this newest addition to the ID family. This show is beyond bad to where I watched episodes four and five because I wanted to see how low this show could go. For those of you who have only watched one or two episodes it just gets worse and, as I stated on another website, I now call this show "What not to do if you are being stalked".

"Life doesn't imitate art, it imitates bad television."

I just watched it for the first time and agree to some extent based on this episode, although in this case the woman did a pretty decent job of handling things. However, I think she should have pushed for more help sooner. It was clear the woman was severely mentally ill even before she began actively stalking her.

That's pretty much why I didn't enjoy the show. They showed a woman with an Eastern-European accent living alone and yelling things like "You die!" and yelling animal sounds for long periods of time, yet they never explained if she had a job, family, friends, was a citizen, was perhaps a victim of war crimes and had emigrated to the U.S., nothing to explain her behavior. Surely at some point Amy must have learned something about her history.

I had nothing but sympathy for Amy, but found the show repetitious and lacking in depth.

WTH didn't she record the yelling & screaming? She could then take it to the cops or the home owners association? By the way, does this crazy bitch work? How does she pay rent or the monthly note?

reply

Those were the kind of things I was wondering. That maybe, given their focus on her accent and choice of physicality of actress, that she possibly had been a victim or war crimes in another country and that had caused her behavior. Yet, they told us nothing, not even anything of public record.

I did wonder why she didn't at least take a photo of the boxes that were put in front of her door with "police" written on each of them. If anything, that would in some was probably have allowed them to charge the woman with impersonating police. But with someone like that the only thing to do is to get away.

As far as recording, though, it's harder than you think. You have to have great equipment. What sounds loud (e.g. barking dog) and goes on endlessly for you (and I know of which I speak) doesn't sound so bad on something like your iPhone, and I don't know when that was or what she might have had or been available. When you hear things in context repeatedly you know there's something wrong, but then taking them out of context for people who deal with the law is completely different. You know, "Before certain hours she has the right to 'sing'" when everyone would know perfectly well she's not singing, but that's where that would end up in court. That's why I think the boxes were so important. There's no other explanation except that she put them there to harass. And she labeled them "police," which would not have made LE happy.

We are landlords and screen carefully. We actually call the references. This started after I convinced my husband the potential renters don't think of us as people like them, but further along in life who can't sell our old condos, due to the economy, and must rent them out. They think of us as THE LANDLORD or THE MAN as if we have money to burn and what they do to us doesn't matter, despite the fact that we keep our units in wonderful shape because we want to sell them eventually, and we just would because we are nice people. We finally had a guy whose last place of residence told us he evicted him for failure to pay rent. Now, why would we rent to him?! So, after my husband tells him we can't rent to him (and I'm pretty sure why, too) he asks if we have anymore units. I said, "See, I told you!" And that guy would probably have sued us after he "fell" down the stairs. We don't need that in ours lives. We had another who pretty much destroyed the carpet, had a couple of noise violations (from neighbors; her parties were how she ruined the carpet, I guess), cracked the ceramic tile (it's a nice place) in the kitchen, and more, but then didn't pay the last month of rent so we had to take it out of the deposit, which left us with nothing to pay for the damages, but chalked up the carpet to, "We were close to needing to replace it anyway," and I found a better carpeting for rentals that looks really nice. Since then (two tenants and maybe four years) we've had no more problems. Now we ask more questions and I even check Facebook pages. Yes, cute college girl who swears she doesn't have a dog, but has a gazillion photos of herself with a dog in every photo, what about that dog? Once they're in, it's hard to get someone out, so we figure it's better to leave it empty another month and find the right person or family than end up with something like our first few tenants.

That all was something they never addressed in that episode that could be very helpful to people. What you can and can't do. Again, I go back to the obvious mental illness of that woman. We don't know if she owned her unit. She might have been a renter, but if legally disabled then her landlords would have had a very difficult time evicting her without copious amounts of evidence because what she was doing fell into a very grey area LEGALLY. A disability lawyer would have been all over that case, whereas she clearly had frightened the entire neighborhood and was at the very least a danger to others. But prove it. Sigh... At best she would end up in some mental health wing of a jail for a time, which would do nothing for her.

This episode could have addressed so many issues, but did nothing but repetitively chronicle the victim's story, to no fault of her own. Someone needs to get on the ball with this show.

They may not (and probably didn't) reveal everything that actually happened. That's the problem with semi- real TV. They have to take an actual event(s) and make it work for TV, which isn't always easy.

Having said that, I still think she could have used a recording device (other than her phone). You can still buy recorders. And if the shouting, barking was as loud as they showed it would have been easy to make out on tape. "You Die!" shouted over & over is pretty plain. I would have taken the curtain violation letter to the Home Owners Assn. and told them about the crazy ass woman next door. You know they had to have had complaints before. There is no way this woman just started with her crazy ass 'possessed' act. Maybe they were afraid to tackle the issue head on b/c of a lawsuit. Maybe they had & she threatened. Either way I would have reported it promptly.

I don't normally watch this show or ones like it b/c I get tired of them repeating the same information over & over (to fill in the 48 minutes of time). Plus, it's obvious they are playing up some aspects of the cases for TV.

this is Amy's blog and she writes about her experiences with the neighbor in a very detailed fashion. This may answer some questions that were left hanging.

Have any of you watched "Silent Scream" episode 8? Her parents acted like she put it on herself, she did NOTHING to make this guy obsessed w/her and he also called her a *beep* and obviously the guy she liked (forget his name) set her up - it wasn't his apartment he invited her over to - watch a video/movie. Its sick how this guy she liked and he really acted as if he liked her set her up like that - she gets to "his supposed apartment" and he's like just wait here I got to go brush my teeth and suddenly its the crazy stalker guy who comes in and starts calling her names and harassing her (recording it as well). Seems like Jane couldn't trust anybody at that college that was supposed to be diversified - I didn't finish watching it all (I will) but its obvious they didn't catch the guy b/c she wouldn't say where the safe house was- the sheriff's office put she and her family at, Jane said just in case my family is still there. Jane is little older now but seems so far she has no contact w/her family. The police don't know WTF they are doing obviously if Jane changed her looks completely - she so sad looking, and was adopted by a Lutheran family when she was a baby so they are very stoic and don't understand the harassment (calling her *beep* and other discriminating words for Korean, Chinese, Japanese) put up w/since she was in elementary, middle, high-school college; she just held all this harassing inside all her life, parents should've listened to her cry for help instead of just ignoring it; so sad for her
I'm going to finish watching it now.. but my favorite one and saddest one is the lady whose husband was killed in that bar by that stalker creep; justice sucks - the law changed after Ben died but it sure didn't help any when he was alive. I felt so bad for that lady, they loved each other so much.

I've seen two episodes and have not been impressed. The one where the opera singer was being stalked was the worst. The story basically told the same sentence over and over again.. "This guy is sending me threats and ruining my life."
This went on for an hour. While I'm sure it was terrifying, it didnt make for good television. The hour long reenactment show is getting somewhat stale. Showing as many risqué scenes as they can instead of focusings on crime solving techniques may not be the direction they should go. My all time favorite true crime shows are forensics files, new dectectives, FBI files, american justice and shows of that ilk. I guess it sounds like I'm complaining, but I still do watch ID channel more than any other, I just hope some new shows can get back to basics

I know. I feel like You could learn more about actual law from fictional Law & Order than this show.

I really like the show but i think the opera one was fake. The girl way too dramatic but in a terrible acting way.

I don't know why I raised my hand.

I can somewhat relate to the crazy neighbor episode. I have a neighbor who screams and argues with no one in her yard quite often. She has yelled out comments to us several times which made no sense. If I'm outside alone, she screams insults at me. My mother was visiting us and had a talk with the neighbor's father, who was also visiting. Our neighbor has mental issues and apparently goes off of her medication quite often. According to the info my mother got, her income is SS Mental Disability. I called our mutual landlord and was told that as long as she wasn't threatening us, there was nothing that could be done. Knowing this, the landlord rented another place to her! Now the crazy neighbor is renting the places on both sides of us. We just stay vigilant, it's all that we can do.

I watched the episode earlier this evening about the pregnant girl who was being stalked over the phone by the guy who worked at her local pizza place, as it turned out - the girl who's poor puppy dog was kidnapped then returned to her in a terrible state.
Why did she keep answering her phone when she knew it was only him calling her 500 times per day?
Every phone I've owned has had an 'off' button, she obviously didn't know how that worked.
And she should have insisted that the Police got further involved instead of allowing her family and neighbours to act as vigilantes, incidentally without any success.
It was enough to convince me that I won't be watching any more Obsession Dark Desires.

"Stop listening to music made by poofs - Stick on some Elton John".

"Stalked: Someone's Watching" was a better show. It was 30 minutes and less repetitive.

Have to say I much prefer the full hour shows, when you count in the advert/commercial breaks a 30 minute show leaves very little time. I actually really enjoy this one. One or two are a bit hit miss but over all they're very interesting.

reply

I thoroughly enjoy the show. Just because it shows you what not to do doesn't mean it has no value; you can still learn from it. DON'T DO WHAT THESE PEOPLE DID is a good warning, IMO. You can learn from other's mistakes.

It's easy to sit back and be an armchair quarterback. The reality is no one knows how they'll react in any given situation until they are confronted with it. Sure we all feel we would be much smarter/aware than the people on this show and that may well be true. But you never know until it happens.

Shows that show you what not to do have value, IMO.

Have you seen "Amish Mafia" on the Discovery Channel. It is historically bad.

reply

It seems that Investigation Discovery launches a new series almost every week.

I actually really like this show! It's campy and just realistic enough to be creepy. I don't agree with how several of the victims reacted in certain situations but I still love the show nonetheless. It's one of my guilty pleasures :)
