Why did they pick actors that look so much older than the characters?

I think Corbin Allred is a good actor, but he was 34 years old and playing a 20-year-old in this movie. I realize it's common to cast actors that are older than the characters they are playing, but at least they usually pick people who look younger. If fact, to me Corbin looked like he could be about 40 in this. No matter how good an actor someone is, if they look that much older than their role, it's not believable. Were there no younger actors out there who could play the role? And there probably are 34-year-olds who could pull it off, but not Corbin. The guy who played the other missionary I thought could pull off playing a 20-year-old better, although I'm not sure of his age.

Maclain Nelson graduated from college in 2003, so he was approximately 32 during production of this film, ± a year or so.

Personally, I'm getting tired of seeing Corbin Allred in every LDS-themed film that's produced, but I have to admit, his acting ability has developed quite a bit over the years. There might not have been any younger actors that auditioned for the role, or didn't audition as well. There are typically a number of factors that go into casting a particular role in any given film.

I hope this is helpful.
