What is Episode 3 parodying?

Half way through watching this on Netflix. So far I am liking it. I find it very funny. But episode three I didn't entirely get. The parts with Devon traveling with that long voice over and then the scenes with him and Cynthia while he's kicking the drug habit. I didn't get most of that and got the sense it was parodying something specific or at least a type of film or something similar, and was wondering what?

My immediate though was that it's a rough parody of Jack Karouac & the jazz obsessed beat writer's of the era.

The detox scene was a direct parody of The Man with the Golden Arm; the line "I got a monkey on my back," a man asking the woman he loves to help him go cold turkey by locking himself in his room, etc.

There's something I know when I'm with you that I forget when I'm away

It was a parody of every "kicking the habit" cliché ever used. In the late 50's it was trendy and daring to show the withdrawal. Synanon was rife with it.

Devon's voice over in the first part of the episode parodies beatnik writing in general and the poem Howl by Allen Ginsberg in particular. I recommend reading it. You will hear it referenced again and again - it's a generational touchstone.
