So... Weinstein Re-Releases SouthPaw for Oscar season...

and he's not pushing this movie? Never trust that dude. I have no issues with Gyllenhaal or Southpaw, but why not push this movie? He may have even bought the distribution rights to Macbeth so he can hold it back.

I don't think he's really releasing the movie for awards season. He's just being his grimey self and trying to squeeze some extra dollars out of the movie. That's his M.O.

What do you want him to do to push Macbeth? It's not even been released yet in some territories, so it obviously wouldn't be possible to re-release it.

Where did I say re-release a movie that's not released yet. You're argument doesn't match. I'm wondering why he isn't pushing this movie when it's getting huge reviews from critics and audiences in countries where it's playing. Why not open earlier in the states?

You said that Weinstein should push Macbeth and then spent the rest of your post complaining about the re-release of Southpaw, so I thought I'd semi-jokingly remind you that Weinstein couldn't exactly re-release Macbeth.

Assuming that there are no actual reasons for Macbeth's late USA release, I'm still not sure that it's worth getting upset about. The film will be released in early December and the Academy Awards are at the end of February, so that's 3 months. Many other Awards pictures are being released in November or early December and Macbeth is right there alongside them.

I had a chance to think about it. As for Macbeth, I think I understand. The Shakespeare text might be a hard sell. I just fell that some of the hard to reach audiences would give Shakespeare a chance anyway. Michael embodies realness. Idk how to say it. I don't think he would even be interested in something cliche or stale. Since he's big in arthouse and blockbuster, it would get more of a push.

Saw a tweet that kind of points to the difficulties with regards to the language:

So I saw the Fassbender MACBETH last night. People were actually walking out of it. They weren't expecting it to be in the original language

Add to that the Scottish accents, plus mumbling/whispering, and you get a film that's going to be inaccessible to the average moviegoer. I get why TWC are reluctant to push it. It'll find its audience, though. Just not a really huge one, probably.

Exactly. Shakespeare adaptations are always going to have a niche audience -- certainly in comparison to a cliched boxing film like Southpaw -- so releasing it a few weeks earlier wouldn't really do much to improve its Oscar chances.

The way in which Weinstein might actually push Macbeth would be to grease some poles behind-the-scenes and, for all we know, he's doing just that. Sending out screeners, holding events, etc.
