Honestly, I found it hard to make out a lot of the spoken words in this. If there had been subtitles I probably would've appreciated it more.
I wouldn't say it needed subtitles, the actors just needed to stop mumbling half their lines.

Oh thank god for that - I though it was just me. I love Shakespeare and don't have any problems with his language in general, but between the thick accents, the music and the mumbled delivery I really struggled to understand what was being said most of the time.
I've seen the play several times in the theatre while my husband knew nothing about it. Both of us felt that we'd watched the edited highlights. Like one of those cliff notes versions you read for exam revision. Marion Cotillard was exceptional - Fassbender less so - and I'm usually a fan of his work.
But when you're halfway through and find yourself playing spot the location something's gone wrong...
To me this added to the experience as my focus was shifted away from the dialogue to watching the magnificent cinematography and performances and listening to the incredible score. I could follow the story perfectly on a visual level.
"There's a big difference between winging it and seeing what happens. Now let's see what happens".
I could understand the shouty bits, so I enjoyed the more extravagant scenes. But the earnest whispered conversations had me baffled, so I was unable to follow the story and I gave it a score of 3.
If they put out a version with subtitles I might end up giving it 8 or 9.
