A visual masterpiece that doesn't connect with the prose

It's undeniable that Kurzel has crafted a visually stunning experience. There are scenes in this film that will make you feel lightheaded, even drunk, with how lush and aesthetically amazing they are. As the film draws to a close and Macbeth and his enemy Macduff (Sean Harris) do battle on a field bathed in blazing red light from a nearby forest fire, you’ll be awed. So much of Macbeth is visually amazing that it’s almost a tragedy that it gets the poetry all wrong.

Polanski's actors are dull.

I think it is an interpretation that focuses on Macbeth himself. After all, Lady Macbeth could never fuse that ambition if it's not already in him. Nonetheless, I can imagine that the slaughterscenes resemble very much those in the editing room with the Weinsteins editing the movie...

A great, smart review, though I'd love to hear more about individual performances. Paddy Considine's a favorite of mine - I've never known him to be a classical actor so I'd like to hear how he handled the (somewhat undemanding) role of Banquo. Sean Harris as well, who was excellent in the most recent Mission Impossible and less so in Prometheus.
