Did anyone else not buy...

... CARL's ignorance about the internet? Not everyone has to know the "mechanics" of Twitter, but he didn't understand that people could read something online and that something could become viral. Not to mention the PR implications (like money).

I mean, he's not old. Actually, I think even old people would know some of those things.

Edit: Most of the users who've replied don't seem to understand my post. They've said that it's normal for CARL not to understand how social media works, despite my emphasys. Please, read carefully.

Maybe he worked 60 hours per week and spent his spare time exploring food markets and inventing new recipes and menus.

Flip the 6 upside down and you have a more realistic depiction of the hours he was working...

I don't think its too far fetched to think he knew the Internet but did not know social media.

I am very quick on the Internet, use it all day for my profession, hundreds of web sites yet I don't use social media as the same profession at my level does not permit it. I understand how Twitter, FB, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Vine, etc. work but without using it daily you cannot be certain you know every function. Those sites change every day; what you can and cannot do. I was on FB when it first came out only for college students, early 2000's, it's completely different now. It was completely different just a few months after it began.

Btw I am 30 years old. While these days I don't "absolutely" believe in the older people stereotype of misunderstanding the Internet/social media, I do believe I am in the minority being a non-user at my age. And I do think those that grew up without these outlets have a greater chance of ignoring them. So again, I don't think it is unrealistic that he is not social media savvy, especially given his age.

There are some people who choose not to enter into a technological world, and I would tend to think that a chef might be a type of person to be that way.

Before I became an IT professional, sitting in front of a computer for extended periods of time each day, I was a musician for the US Military, and when computers and the internet first started to boom, initially I staunchly decided not to even begin to learn to use computers - not only did I not want to, I didn't see a benefit for me there. Then I decided I wanted to change the course of my life and get out of the military, and going into computers was the method I chose. Otherwise...? Dunno.

It doesn't change my answer. If a person staunchly refuses to educate themselves when it comes to matters of technology and social media, the simple truth is that they still wouldn't understand the implications of how something might "go viral" or why.

I'm in my 40's, don't work nearly as many hours as Carl does and I never got into Twitter. I still don't know how it works. It just boils down to a lack of interest. I would probably need a tutorial, similar to how his son gave to him.

It is not that far fetched to believe he was not up to date on the latest social media fads. I work with people in their late 30s-40s who have no idea what Twitter, Snapchat, Vine, or Tinder is. I would not be surprised if they did not know what the term "viral" really meant either. Hell, I am in my early 30s and still learn new things when my niece and nephew who are in their teens visit.

I'm not into Twitter at all. In fact, I often hear this little bird sound a lot and wonder what the heck is that??? Now I know. . . .. haha

It was an acceptable plot device for a character who is a workaholic guy in his mid 40s who doesn't seem to have any friends outside of work.
