Good movie, bad ending!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

No, I am not against dark endings. In fact, I like movies with dark endings that surprise you by going against the norm.

The movie is well directed and has strong acting to go with it all through. I like all the dark humor and reeking sarcasm that AK is known for. My only complaint is the ending! I sort of expected that the little girl will be dead, going by how each character in the movie was driven by greed, self preservation, and personal agendas, even amidst all the horror around them. I don't have a problem with the girl's death at the end, only with the way it was handled. The girl's body is smack in the middle of a parking lot, and that too exposed to the air in the sidecar of a scooter, and no one notices for so long in a bustling city? Really? Come on AK! You made such a good movie, but handled the ending so illogically! Still...a good movie that is a million times better than all the crap Bollywood dishes out whole year.

Totally agree. It was such a downer.
Brought the whole superb movie to an abrupt and hugely unsatisfying as well as stupid end. Until then it was a hell of a cracker movie.

What were you expecting here?

I have a slight different perspective.
I felt as it was a sort of showing something else by showing such way of ending. They all were after something. some after money and some after past out-do things. No one was worried for girl being alive or well, everything was being done randomly. The lame ending infact meant a strong meaning that if ever,the whole effort had been meaningful, the death of Kali could have been avoided but because it was all driven by greed and madness so it ended up devastatingly.

The question of liking the ending really depends on one's way of looking at it but logically, i think the ending was just fine. You can't really conclude the girl was left uncovered. The kidnapper would obviously cover her. May be the police took it off to show the deadbody to Shoumik. Since she would be covered by the kidnapper, no one really notices her, it's a busy city and who gives a damn about a scooter parked along with several other vehicles!

Definitely think the body was covered. As the female cop and the aunt of the kidnapper walk through the lane, its got lot of vehicles which are covered. Its surely plausible that the kidnapper first drugged and tied her and then covered the vehicle and left it there. What drew the attention was the dogs barking around it and the smell, you can see from the scene that its not directly visible to the aunt or the cop at first.

And...the smell? You can't argue that no one noticed the stench!

It is logical to think that the kidnapper may have covered the girl after drugging and tying her. The girl was kidnapped during the day. He wouldn't have been able to drug her and tie her up in broad daylight in front of the whole damn city. He may have done it in a private/secluded place, or in a car. If he did, why didn't he leave her in that private/secluded place or car, instead of leaving her next to a frequently used road, in an open parking lot, barely covered in a scooter? There is even a bustling apartment close by. Doesn't make any sense!

Fair point about the stench - but do people really go investigate a bad stench on open roads in Mumbai? Its a stretch of imagination, sure - improbable but not impossible.
As for the point about the kidnapper, he's been doing this and is probably adept at tying a kid up. He cant carry a drugged kid far, along with his mask stall, without attracting attention to himself so a nearby location to temporarily hide the kid makes sense. And judging by how the aunt went to the location straightaway suggests they probably had this as a modus operandi. I dont know if this was the most logical thing to do, but hey we dont really expect a kidnapper to be behaving logically also.

One point that I'd like to add, something noone else has managed to point out is:
The kidnapper didn't plan to let the girl die. It was because of his untimely death that she was left there, If he had been alive probably he would have called for ransom and transferred the girl somewhere else.

I would disagree. it was in the corner and the girl was covered with a sheet. if you notice, as soon as it rains, the other two officers start pulling a cover on top of the body. I think that was the cover under which she was kept. And when covered, the stench doesn't really escape prominently. maybe there might be a faint smell but its mumbai.. probably gets lost in all the other stenches.

my problem is that A.. she got kidnapped drugged and stashed away and not one soul noticed. I find that a little hard to believe but ok whatever, I dont have enough stats take an issue with that

B. she is drugged to keep quite. I would think that once the drug wore off she would have gotten up screamed or something. I dont think the motive of the guy was to kill her.. he would have definitely sold her as in the past. the only explanation is that the drug dose was large and she passed away. or that the sheet left her no gaps to breathe through and being drugged on top of that, she must have passed away in her sleep. a little explanation would have been handy.

but perhaps how she got kidnapped and how she died is irrelevant to the plot of the movie. we are just to accept that these two things have happened and concentrate on the ugly side of seeming innocent people and the human side of seemingly ugly people.

Bad ending - No, Sad ending - Yes. The way the movie unfolds you know why it has been titled 'Ugly'. And honestly, I did not expect any other ending for this movie - I hoped for, but did not expect it.

Yes the ending did leave a lot of questions unanswered and was kind of silly. How did the girl die if she was only drugged? It would take at least four or five days for her to die on her own and the drugs were bound to get worn off within a few hours. She could've screamed or moved a bit and draw attention.
Besides didn't the aunty know where she was hidden? Why didn't she just sell the child off herself or try to save her. Why did she allow her to die?
Thirdly I don't understand Rahul's logic. If he really wanted his daughter back why did he play with Bose? Then suddenly he realized what a dumbass he is and kills his friend?
All seems to lack a little logic.

The girl was tied, her mouth was shut. How would she scream and move?! She was also covered, it's such a busy city, no one would notice her. And she was found after a week she was abducted, of course she would die.

May be the aunty wasn't sure where the kidnapper hid the girl or if the kidnapper abducted the girl or not, because he was dead and the aunty doesn't even know he was dead.

And about Rahul, Chaitanya brainwashes Rahul and makes him believe that Kali was with Shoumik. Rahul and Shoumik are constantly playing a game to out-do each other. So Rahul teams up with his friends and runs away with the money thinking that Shoumik was planning something against him. But when Rahul calls Shoumik, Shoumik asks him if he has Kali with him or would cut the line if he(Rahul) doesn't have her. Then Rahul realizes that Chaintanya fooled him for money.

The film just doesn't explain explicitly the reason behind everything. It wasn't silly or illogical

Oh c'mon there were so many other vehicles around. She was bound and gagged and not paralysed. Even the cover was a typical scooter cover. The only explanation is that the place where she was kept was completely isolated for days. Maybe that's why no one got the smell.

The theory of her not knowing doesn't make sense because she herself showed them the place. The only explanation is maybe she just didn't give a damn about the girl and let her die.

I still don't really get Rahul's logic. All said and done how was he expecting to get his girl back? In fact he should've been scared that Shoumik would get pissed because he got cheated and maybe harm the girl. Just how was his whole plan supposed to help get his daughter back? Unless he somehow thought Shoumik would give him his daughter in return of the money which he stole. That's the only explanation I can think of. Makes you question if he really wanted to get her back or not.

The aunty was clearly not sure if the girl was there (in the place where she was found) or not. She kind of looks guessing (guessing because they should have hid someone there in the past) and coincidentally the girl gets found there.

And coming to Rahul thing, both Shoumik and Rahul were concerned about Kali from the beginning. Rahul got brainwashed by his friend that Shoumik has the girl and was setting him up. Because of this, Rahul was thinking that Kali was with Shoumik, safe, but Shoumik was still sending him with money to get him (Rahul) attacked. So he runs away with the money but eventually realizes that he was fooled by his friend.
We see that when Shoumik asks Rahul to talk to Chaitanya in the lock up, Rahul kind of suspects Chaitanya for a while but when he (Rahul) gets the ransom call again, Rahul clearly thinks it's not Chaitanya who's behind the abduction and gets angry with Shoumik. Chaitanya should have taken advantage of that situation and should have spoiled Rahul's mind.

Since Kali was living with her mother and Shoumik, Rahul was concerned about getting Kali back to them. He wasn't supposed to have Kali with him, if that's what you are thinking.

I'm sorry, these are such nonsensical arguments.

- Why did she die so easily? Life is fragile, sometimes you are very lucky to survive the worst and sometimes you are very unlucky. The kid was unlucky. The director is trying to say something about the city - that the child was right there and no one noticed. A city so self-absorbed that no one noticed. That's the irony, tragedy of the film. By the way, chloroform can very easily lead to death. It can also lead to nausea and vomiting and someone who is tied up and lying on their back can choke and die on their own vomit. Life is very fragile.

2. The aunt probably didn't want to get involved at all. Also that dude was not her brother. She had no reason to care.

3. You are trying to find logic where there is none. There is no logic to what Rahul starts doing. He gets influenced by his ego, he gets distracted. That's the whole point of the movie.

That is an interesting view on Rahul's intentions. My question, if he thought Shoumik had Kali why didn't he get suspicious at the police handing him 50 lakhs? Why would Shoumik give him the money if he has Kali?

Rahul thinks the whole plan of police giving him 50 lakhs was actually a set up. He thinks Shoumik should be planning something against him and if he (Rahul) takes the bag of money to a place the police tell him, he (Rahul) would get attacked there. But Shoumik wasn't actually planning for an attack on Rahul. The police gave him money to give it to the kidnapper.

True. I even wanted Sri Sri 1008 Sri Anurag Kashyap ji Maharaj (Yes, I do respect this guy a lot) to speak on this thread and explain his mind behind the ending. Movie went really well displaying all what it was meant to but such abrupt ending left me slightly disappointed. It totally kept the kidnapping aside and characters kept barging in with their own motives. But I happily accept that since this is what the ugly side of the world is which movie wanted to depict. But this is hard to digest that the big stench went unnoticed when it was harsh enough to make one policeman vomit. Autos were parked right next to it but nobody came there at all. After the drugs faded, the girl (10 years old) didn't make any random haphazard life-saving body-throwing movements which could possibly have made the scooter tilt and which Every choking soul would do. But the most ugly side of ending is the way it came up. Police suddenly stopped investigating the death of toys vendor and aunty at all (didn't even check their criminal background) and then suddenly out of nowhere they again came up with aunty in the end unfolding the whole package.
Either this was sheer brilliance of Mr Kashyap which we mere mortals can't grasp or he just lost his grip and made an dreadful mistake in the end.

Terrible movie. This was not expected from Anurag Kashyap. How on earth is this still rated 8.3.

Nobody is saying that it is a terrible movie.. they are all discussing that whether or not it deserved a better ending.

It was a brilliant (though gut-wrenching) ending. And when it came, i was left feeling stupid and silly.Will explain why.

Within the first 10 minutes of the movie, we see a guy who tried to run away when asked about the girl's phone. Logically, that guy should be the prime suspect in an event like this. But Anurag Kashyap successfully manipulates our thinking and manages to divert our attention from the most obvious suspect of the kidnapping to the shenanigans of the other characters involved, who try to exploit the tragedy for their own benefit. The whole scenario of betrayal, desperation and helplessness that plays out gets you hooked so badly that you totally ignore the answer to the mystery of the missing girl, staring you in the face all along. The solution that is the simplest and with the fewest assumptions, is oftentimes the correct one.

When the movie ended, i was like "Damn!! How the hell did i forget about that toy vendor??? I'm racking my brain for the last one and half hour, thinking about who it could be, and it was HIM the whole time!!!! DAMN!!"

It is a terrible movie. The whole suspense of the movie was not gripping enough and on top of that, the ending was poor.

Once again you show your insecurity by bringing King Khan into it. I love Anurag Kashyap movies. I loved Dev D, GOW... but this movie is not up to the mark.

loved the movie loved d ending ... v realistic v gripping and superb performances .
