I'm 22 mins into first episode and plot hole ruins series?

Franco asks Cooper why he didn't kill Oswald and Cooper says he doesn't know if Oswald did it so doesn't want to kill him. Well, kill Oswald, see what effect it has... If Kennedy still dies Cooper can always go back and reset past?

I have seen this posted a few times Al doesn't want to kill an innocent person. Even if he can reset it or not. He isn't a psychopath that wants to kill people he wants to kill someone that did something bad in history. Also Oswald doesn't come back for to the US for 2 years are you going to wait 2 years to find out it didn't change anything then come back and have to wait another 3 years. Now you've spent 5 years of your life. In the book the time was longer it was 1958 that the portal went back to. Which gave you only 1 shot at it especially with the way the past pushes back.

This same question has been raised on this forum about 12 times it seems.

It should not be hard to find one and read the responses.

A character choosing to not do what you what have personally chosen to do is never, and has never been, a plot hole.
I like how so many people on the internet are so casual about murdering somebody in cold blood just to see what happens.

I'm Kevin Roberts and I'm the coolest bitch in town!

Having the ability to immediately undo it and not waste years of your life seems kind of obvious though. Also, he's risking cancer (or some other threat from time pushing back).

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

I agree Donut,

Not to mention he would have to live there for 3 years first just to try out this experiment. The OP seems to think the whole operation can take two minutes.

"Look at it this way; in a hundred years who's gonna care?"

reply

Wouldn't they just have found someone else to kill JFK?

I agree about resetting it so you have pretty much unlimited do-overs.

I'm not sure if this is a "plot hole" (people seem to disagree what that term even means) but it is something these characters should have addressed better, instead of just glossing over it with some lame excuse.

reply

If they found someone else to kill JFK, then they have the answer, that yes, it's a conspiracy and not just Oswald acting alone.

"Congratulations, you're going to go down in history as the man who killed Superman."

reply

Agree.

I have been watching it and my thoughts exactly. If you can reset time then why not kill Oswald, see where it leads and restart if necessary. Simples.

BTW: I was very impressed with the first two episodes but the third is not up to it. I don't like the sidekick - annoying little man.

Not only is Oswald in Russia until 1962, meaning Jake would have to wait for 2 whole years for him to return to the U.S. to kill him, but he was also all the way across the country in Texas. The portal is in Maine. Even if he did kill Oswald he would have to make a run back to Maine with the Po-Po on his tail.

reply

It's a bad plot issue but it's just a TV show. Need to lower expectations.

How is it a bad plot issue? The portal is in Maine. Oswald does not return to Texas until 1962, a fact of real history. In the book the portal led to 1958 so Jake had to wait at least 4 years until Oswald's return. It's not a bad plot issue it was written that way to keep the main character from doing exactly what everyone is saying. "Just go through and kill Oswald and if it doesn't work reset the portal." That kind of book would last about 50 pages. With the wait time it gives the story a chance to develop and for Jake and Sadie to fall in love and have much more vested in the whole mission by the end. It's what makes the book really good. One of King's better books.

I have yet to watch the mini-series, but this issue was described in the book. I'm not sure if it would be considered a spoiler, so just in case:

The Green Card Man at the end of the novel describes how it's not a complete reset each time a person enters that day in 1958 (1960 in the series from what I have gathered). Each time is considered a different "thread," and TGCM and his predecessors have struggled because they have so much in their mind - probably thousands of future "threads." It's not as simple as going back through the bubble, killing Oswald (or whatever you do), and going back through to see the future. More things are affected, as it's not an actual complete reset.

Hope that helps, at least from the book perspective.

It is going to get wet in here tonight. Lace your boots up, kiddies.

"In the book the portal led to 1958 so Jake had to wait at least 4 years until Oswald's return.

But Oswald was in the U.S. from November 1958 until October 1959.

reply

But it was the Oswald before the trip to Russia.

So?
