Is this show like Little House On The Prarie?

I loved little house... Would I like this?

THAT IS SO FUNNY... I WAS ABOUT TO POST THE SAME EXACT THING! I have not seen this show, but I also love Little House and am curious to know if this is similar

reply

Yes, and I wasn't at all surprised to learn that Michael Landon, Jr produces and directs it. The acting isn't as good, but I am thoroughly enjoying it nevertheless.

The hairstyles and a lot of the language is not period authentic, which is driving this Civil War reenactor crazy!

I think it wants to be?

No, it most certainly isn't trying to be Little House, very much less dramatic, thank goodness.

reply

Doesn't mean it doesn't want to be. Just means that it doesn't get there. ;)

I love Little House too and no it doesn't have the same feel as Little House but it tries. I've enjoyed it but I came into the show because I've loved the book for years & years. If you are looking for the books on screen then you will be disappointed. Similar to Little House. But the stories are great and so are the characters.

To Me it seems more similar to Road to Avonlea which was a Canadian TV series set in the same town, Avonlea from Anne of green gables.
However this show is Sort of similar to little house on the prairie. If you liked Little house on the prairie, road to Avonlea or the Anne of green gables movies I would recommend this show.

reply

YES. It is a lot like Road to Avonlea. I loved that show too. I haven't thought of it in years.

This show is also similar to the short-lived Kellie Martin TV series Christy (1994). Christy was also about a school teacher from the big city who went to a remote place to become a schoolteacher. But I'd say if you love Little House, you'll love When Calls the Heart.

One poster mentioned anachronisms with hairstyle and fashions, but even Little House had those same anachronisms. Most of the cast on Little House had 1970s/80s hairdos in a show that was set in the 1880s.

When Calls the Heart is set a little bit later than Little House in the 1910s, but it still has the old west feel to it because it is set in a very small town in a remote section of Canada. The TV show Christy that I mentioned before was also set in the 1910s, but in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.

I've loved the show since it premiered and have just started the last (6th) book in Janette Oke's Canadian West series that the show was based on. There are some differences between the books and the series, but I like them both. Janette Oke and her daughter have recently written a few books that more closely follow the characters and events from the tv series, but I haven't read those yet.

I don't know what they have to say. It makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is, I'm against it.
